This happened to you because those mobs put a stacking debuff on you (Raging Embers: Spell ID: 234826) that increases fire damage by 10% per stack. These stacks are applied quickly, so pulling more than one is a bad idea, so you'll want to CC one or kill each one as quickly as possible. The base Fel Fireball spell does still hit pretty hard, but I think it's safe to assume that you only got nuked that hard because you had a lot of debuffs.
