A new expansion, a new begining, so let’s start with what you need to learn how you will play this specialization. In the next minutes i will show you the changes happened with the paladin in the blizzard patch notes and a mini-feedback(if it’s a nerf or not). So hang on, here we go.

!!!!Note: These are the changes from 5.0.4 until 5.4.8 that affects less or a lot this class and specialization. I marked every patch note with nerf/buff and a specific color like this: #BUFF /#NERF
  • All classes have been updated with a new talent system, improved abilities, and spells (accessible throughout levels 1-85). Your character's talents have been reset. Many old talents have been converted to specialization abilities.
  • Max Holy Power increased from 3 to 5. However, this doesn't actually mean your attacks can -use- a maximum of five holy power. They can only use 3 holy power maximum. #BUFF
  • Librams were removed.
  • Avenging Wrath now has a cooldown of 2 minutes for Retribution Paladins (was 3 minutes). #BUFF
  • Judgment now costs 5% of base mana.
  • Glyph of Templar's Verdict can also activate from Exorcism. #BUFF
  • Seal of Justice now causes melee attacks to deal an additional 20% (was 16%) as Holy damage. #BUFF
  • Seal of Righteousness now causes melee attacks to deal 9% damage (was 6%) to targets in the area-of-effect.
  • Sword of Light now increases Flash of Light by 100% (was 30%) and increases the Paladin's damage with two-handed melee weapons by 15% (was 10%).#BUFF
  • Absolve is a new passive ability for Retribution Paladins. Absolve removes all harmful magic effects when Hard of Sacrifice is cast on a party member.
  • Retribution 2-piece PvP set bonus now grants 1000 PvP power (was 800).
  • Sword of Light now increases damage with two-handed melee weapons by 30%, up from 15%. #BUFF
  • Divine Protection is now usable while stunned.
  • Blessing of Kings had its mana cost reduced to 5%, down from 22.3%.
  • Blessing of Might had its mana cost reduced to 5%, down from 22.3%.
  • Guardian of the Ancient Kings (Retribution version) now has a reduced cooldown of 3 minutes, down from 5 minutes, and the maximum number of stacks has been reduced to 12. #BUFF & #NERF a huge reduction to our dmg in burst
  • Inquisition now lasts 20 seconds per charge of Holy Power consumed, up from 10 seconds. #BUFF
  • Tier-14 Retribution 4-piece set bonus has been changed to increase damage on all Seals and Judgment by 10%. #BUFF
  • Execution Sentence will now immediately damage the target for 5 times the amount of damage that had been dealt by Execution Sentence's most recent periodic effect when dispelled.#BUFF
  • Divine Storm now consumes 3 charges of Holy Power instead of generating one and deals 50% weapon damage in holy damage. #NERF
  • Exorcism is now instant cast, but on a 15 second cooldown. #BUFF
  • Exorcism used to have a chance of proccing an instant-cast Exorcism. It now has a chance to reset the cooldown. #BUFF
  • Exorcism and Judgment generate Holy Power. #BUFF
  • All auras have been removed, as well as Holy Wrath and Concentration. #NERF
  • Hammer of the Righteous now applies the Weakened Blows effect.
  • NEW ABILITIES:
Execution Sentence: A hammer slowly falls from the sky, causing increasing Holy damage to the designated target for the next 10 seconds and culminating in a final burst of damage. Stay of Execution: If used on friendly targets, the falling hammer heals the target for the next 10 seconds and culminates in a final burst of healing.
Holy Prism: Sends a beam of light toward a target, turning them into a prism for Holy energy.
If an enemy is the prism, they take % Holy damage and radiate % healing to 5 nearby allies within 10 yards.
If an ally is the prism, they are healed for 100 and radiate % Holy damage to 5 nearby enemies within 10 yards.
Light’s Hammer: Hurl a Light-infused hammer into the ground, where it will blast a 10 yard area with Holy magic for (16 sec.5) sec. The hammer deals % damage to enemies within the area, and healing to allies within the area, every 2 sec.

  • Hammer of the Righteous Protection was kind enough to loan us their AoE holy power generator. Divine Storm will be our new AoE holy power finisher & losing Holy Wrath. For some, the loss of Holy Wrath is going to be a big hit, but for many of us it's going to be a welcome reprieve from the hours of careful dancing while using this ability in an attempt to avoid breaking CCs or hitting an unwanted target. If you were playing just for Holy Wrath, you're going to have to switch to prot. #NERF
  • Consecration, another ability that prot spirited away in the middle of the night, Consecration is being removed from our toolbox as well. Like Holy Wrath, I'm not particularly sad to see this mana hog go, but I will look back fondly on all of the great times we spent together.#NERF
  • Hammer of Wrath is effected by Hand of Light and generates 1 charge of holy power.#BUFF

Retribution as a #1 burst class is gone, this means that we will try to fight our way in the recount to not get beaten by a tank. There are a few specializations that we should out-class them at DPS but not at Damage Done. So, to survive in a guild you must make some changes at your character sheet(reforges, geming, chosing your gear etc) to play as a sustain class(even if you got abilities that use to be burst). So, blizzard made some changes in the holy power system, talent tree and haste. Almost every ability is affected by Haste, on Cataclysm only Crusader Strike was affected drastically, Haste was as the worst stat for paladin, that’s why we were always reforging from it to get our hit and expertise. On Mists of Pandaria, haste becomes *king of the kill* you must have at least 40% haste from reforges, and 50% as overcapped.

#1 Choosing your race - i consider this only a design choice, even if some racials help you pve-ing(alliance racials), that’s not a reason to not choose playing by the horde side.

    Human - Sword&Mace Specialization - 1% more expertise
Dwarf - Mace Specialization - 1% more expertise
    Draenei -1% hit chance
Blood Elf - silence&mana gain saver
    Tauren - stun&increased hp

#2 About your character sheet
Hit Rating decreases the chance that your melee attacks will miss their target (7.5% against a raid boss). Therefore, your goal is to reach the 7.5% hit cap, which will ensure that your attacks never miss.

Expertise Rating decreases the chance that your melee attacks will be dodged (7.5% against a raid boss). Therefore, your goal is to reach the 2.6% expertise cap on this server, which will ensure that your attacks are never dodged. Because on freakz the dodge system is a bit bugged atm.

Strength is your primary statistic. You should look for it in all of your upgrades. It provides you with Attack Power, which determines the damage your abilities do.

Haste Rating increases your attack speed and lower the cooldown and global cooldown of Crusader Strike, Judgment, Hammer of Wrath, and Hammer of the Righteous (thanks to your Sanctity of Battle passive ability). This leads to a higher Holy Power generation.

Mastery Rating, thanks to Mastery: Mastery: Hand of Light, causes threeof your important abilities to deal extra damage, as Holy damage.

Critical Strike Rating increases your chance to critically hit withall spells and abilities.

Strength vs Haste Rating, at lower gear levels (pre-raid gear all the way until average Tier 14 raiding gear), one point of Strength is worth more than two points of Haste Rating, making Strength desirable in terms of gemming. Once you exceed this gear level, however, Strength becomes less valuable, meaning that gemming Haste becomes the better option.

You should never really skip a gear upgrade because it does not have Haste Rating on it, though, since Mastery Rating and Critical Strike rating are both rather close in value to Haste Rating, so the increased item level of the upgrade is generally preferable.

  • Stat Priority - early gear

    Hit (7,5%) > Expertise (2,6%) > Haste ( at least 40%) > Mastery > Crit

  • Stat priority - end gear

    Hit (7,5%) > Expertise (2,6%) > Haste ( max 50%) > Mastery > Crit

Read what does every talent and why you should use that.

  • Tier 1 Talents

Tier 1 talents offer you a choice between 3 means of improving your movement speed.

Speed of Light is an active ability, with a 45-second cooldown, which increases your movement speed by 70% for 8 seconds.
Long Arm of the Law causes your successful Judgments to increase your movement speed by 45% for 3 seconds.
Pursuit of Justice passively grants you 15% increased movement speed, and an additional 5% increased movement speed for each charge of Holy Power that you have, up to a maximum of 3 (so, up to a grand total of 30%increased movement speed).
Your choice here will depend entirely on your playstyle and the requirements of the encounter.

Speed of Light is excellent because it offers you a reliable movement speed burst.

Pursuit of Justice offers you a constant, passive movement speedboost, which is excellent for moving out of harmful effects. You need to be pooling Holy Power to get the full benefit of this talent (which you often will not be).

Long Arm of the Law will prove to have a high uptime. In most encounters, it should satisfy your need for moving quickly. It is especially good when you need to move often from one target to another, since you will probably judge when you are not in melee range.

  • Tier 2 Talents

Tier 2 talents offer you a choice between 3 means of crowd-control.

Fist of Justice is an improved version of Hammer of Justice, which it replaces. Fist of Justice stuns the target for 6 seconds, with a 30-second cooldown, from a 20-yard range.
Repentance puts the (Demon, Dragonkin, Giant, Humanoid, orUndead) target to sleep for 1 minute. Damage done to the target will break the effect, and only one target can be under this effect at one time (from the same Paladin).
Evil is a Point of View allows you to use Turn Evil on Humanoids and Beasts.
The talent choice here is largely irrelevant, and it will not affect your performance in any way. You should choose based on your own preference, or on the requirements of the encounter, in terms of add crowd-control.

That said, during Tier 15 raiding you will probably want to choose Fist of Justice for most encounters, since the stun is very useful agains tadds.

  • Tier 3 Talents

Tier 3 talents offer you a choice between 3 healing abilities.

Selfless Healer causes your Judgments to reduce the cast timeand mana cost of your next Flash of Light by 35% per stack. Additionally, if used on players other than yourself, it also increases their healing by 20% per stack. If you have Bastion of Glory stacks, this healing bonus alsoapplies when Flash of Light is self-cast, consuming Bastion of Glory. The effect can stack up to 3 times.
Eternal Flame replaces Word of Glory. It costs Holy Power(up to 3), heals the target for an amount roughly equal to Word of Glory's healing, and places a HoT on the target, lasting 30 seconds. The power of the HoT is dependant on the amount of Holy Power with which the spell is used. When Eternal Flame is used on yourself, the HoT's power is increased by 100%.
Sacred Shield places a 30-second buff on the target, which then goes on to create a damage absorption shield every 6 seconds. The individual shields being broken by damage or expiring has no effect on the main buff.Sacred Shield can be active on more than one target at once. It uses a charge system, having 3 charges and a 10-second recharge time.
Your choice here is between either Selfless Healer or Sacred Shield, since Eternal Flame costs Holy Power, and thus negatively affects your DPS.

Sacred Shield can easily be incorporated into your rotation (which has some down-time), and doing so will reduce a sizeable amount of damage over the course of the fight. We believe that this is the superior choice in most cases, so we advise it.

Selfless Healer will provide you with the greatest utility for your raid. You will nearly always have 3 stacks of the buff, due to the frequent usage of Judgment in your rotation. This way, you can always pitch in and helpout a low health raid member with a strong, instant-cast Flash of Light. Even used on yourself, the heal is quite effective.

  • Tier 4 Talents

Tier 4 talents offer you a choice between 3 ways of situationally improving your utility.

Hand of Purity places a 6-second buff on a target, reducing the damage they take from harmful periodic effects by 80%, and from harmful periodic effects that cannot be prevented by immunities by 40%. It also reduces all damage taken by 10%.
Unbreakable Spirit reduces the cooldown of Divine Shield, Divine Protection, and Lay on Hands by 50%.
Clemency gives each of your Hand spells 2 charges. This means that you can use them twice before triggering the cooldown (but the cooldown will begin ticking as soon as it is used for the first time).
We believe Unbreakable Spirit should be the default choice in most encounters. It greatly improves survivability (by allowing more frequent use of Divine Protection) and utility (allowing you to bypass mechanics or reset debuffs more often with Divine Shield).

Clemency will literally double your already powerful utility. Incase your Hand spells turn out to be useful in an encounter, this talent will undoubtedly be a strong choice.

Hand of Purity's usefulness depends greatly on the number of effects that are affected by it. If it works against relevant boss mechanics, it can be an excellent cooldown to use on the tank. As a rule, debuffs that cannot be removed through immunities (such as Divine Shield) are not affected by Hand of Purity either.

  • Tier 5 Talents

Tier 5 talents offer you a choice between 3 powerful performance-enchancing talents.

Holy Avenger is a 2-minute cooldown that, for 18 seconds, causes your abilities that generate Holy Power to deal 30% additional damage and healing, and to generate 3 charges of Holy Power, instead of 1.
Sanctified Wrath passively increases the duration of Avenging Wrath by 50%. Additionally, while Avenging Wrath is active,it reduces the cooldown of your Hammer of Wrath by 50%.
Divine Purpose gives your abilities that cost Holy Power a 25%chance to cause your next Holy Power-costing ability cost no Holy Power and be cast as if you had 3 charges of Holy Power.
Currently, Sanctified Wrath provides the highest DPS of the three talents, so we advise taking it. The difference between all three talents is quite small though.

At lower (pre-raid) gear levels, Holy Avenger will perform better thanSanctified Wrath. It is also worth noting that since Avenging Wrath has been changed to have a 2-minute cooldown, Holy Avenger lines up perfectly with it and they can be used together. When doing this, the DPS will be only slightly lower than what you would get from Sanctified Wrath, but we still feel that Sanctified Wrath is the better choice.

  • Tier 6 Talents

Tier 6 talents offer you a choice between 3 abilities that are centered around damaging multiple enemies and healing multiple allies.

Holy Prism can be cast on an ally or enemy target. If cast on anenemy, Holy Prism deals damage to them and heals 5 nearby allies. If cast on anally, it heals that ally and damages 5 nearby enemies.
Light's Hammer places a hammer at a target location on the groundfor 16 seconds. During this time, the hammer will heal the 6 most injured nearby allies, as well as damaging all nearby enemies. Enemies' movement speed is also reduced by 50% for 2 seconds each time they take damage.
Execution Sentence can be used on enemies or on allies. If used on an enemy, they take a certain amount of damage over 10 seconds (the damage they take is low at first, and it increases gradually). If used on an ally, they will be healed for a certain amount over 10 seconds (the effect is also gradually increasing). If Execution Sentence is dispelled, it will instantly deal damage or healing to the target (depending on who it is cast on) equal to5 times the value of the most recent tick.
For single-target DPS, Execution Sentence is the best choice, without any doubt. For AoE DPS, Light's Hammer may provide more DPS than Execution Sentence, but the difference is small.

Holy Prism requires too many global cooldowns to use to its fullpotential, and, thus, it should never be taken.

  • Major Glyphs
There are several Major Glyphs that are of interest to you, although none offer clear performance improvements.

Glyph of Double Jeopardy increases the damage of your next Judgment by 20% when used on a different second target. This will not be of any use in single target fights, but when there are several targets, it can be a slight DPS boost.
Glyph of Templar's Verdict reduces the damage you take, for 6 seconds after using Templar's Verdict or Exorcism, by 10%. This glyph is a nice way to help out your healers in progression encounters.
Glyph of Mass Exorcism reduces your Exorcism to melee range, but causes it to deal a small amount of AoE damage, in addition to its single target damage. It is useful in fights where there are multiple targets. Note that the damage that Exorcism does to each target is buffed by the 2P Tier 15 Set Bonus, providing a considerable increase in AoE damage.
Glyph of Hand of Sacrifice removes the damage transfer component of Hand of Sacrifice, making it safer to use.
Glyph of Blinding Light causes your Blinding Light to knock down enemies for 3 seconds instead of blinding them. This has some situational uses in encounters with adds.
Glyph of Harsh Words allows your Word of Glory to be cast against enemies, damaging them. While it is not a better use of Holy Power than Templar's Verdict, it does provide you with a way to deal damage if the target is out of your melee range.
Glyph of Divine Storm heals you for 5% of your maximum health when you use Divine Storm. You are unlikely to ever find uses for this glyph, but if there is an encounter where you need to AoE a lot, and you also need extra healing, then it is a good option.
Glyph of Word of Glory grants you 3% increased damage, for 6 seconds, for each charge of Holy Power that you use on Word of Glory. This glyph is useful both if you are using Word of Glory to heal injured raid members (making up somewhat for the lost DPS), or if you are using Word of Glory to damage enemies at range (through Glyph of Harsh Words).
Glyph of Inquisition extends the duration of Inquisition by 30 seconds, for a total of up to 120 seconds, each time you land a killing blow on targets that yield experience or honor. This glyph is highly situational, and its benefit is hardly reliable, but when you can actually land killing blows with it, it will prove very useful.
Glyph of Divine Protection adds 20% Physical damage reduction to your Divine Protection cooldown, at the expense of 20 % magic damage reduction. This can be useful in certain situations.
Glyph of Avenging Wrath will provide you with a small amount of self-healing over the course of the fight.

  • Minor Glyphs
Minor Glyphs are purely cosmetic, and have no effect on your gameplay.

One glyph is worth mentioning, though. Glyph of the Righteous Retreat increases the cast speed of your Hearthstone by 50% while Divine Shield is active, allowing you to successfully bubble-hearth once again.

Don’t expect a Paladin playing Retribution to do a lot of damage, a sweet reminder of what i’ve said before. He was one of the worst dps-ers in raids on Mists of Pandaria. Below you will have some statistics of how they should be in raids or how they were on Blizzard actually.

So, let’s make a summary to our base abilities then a list of priorities in your rotation and a basic rotation.(Remember, for some 2P/4P bonuses your rotation is changing and you have to make your own rotation, I’ll also give an example of rotation with the latest 4P bonuses in Mists of Pandaria)

    Damage per second spells
  • Inquisition - finisher that increases our Holy Damage by 30% and our Critical Strike Chance by 10% and lasts 10 seconds per Holy Power spent.
  • Templar's Verdict - our main single target damage finisher.
  • Divine Storm - our main multiple target damage finisher.
  • Judgment - big range Holy Power generator, also stacks Censure debuff.
  • Crusader Strike - single target holy power generator.
  • Hammer of the Righteous - multiple target holy power generator.
  • Exorcism - our strong ranged Holy Power generator that has a 15 seconds cooldown which can reset upon melee hitting the target.
  • Hammer of Wrath - our Execute ability that also generates Holy Power and can be used during Avenging Wrath.
  • Seal of Truth - our single target Seal and should be used to stack the Censure debuff if another target is present.
  • Seal of Righteousness - our multiple target Seal which should only be used if there's 8 or more targets present.
  • Execution Sentence - single target filler ability.
  • Light's Hammer - multiple target filler ability.

    Damage per second cooldowns

  • Avenging Wrath - dps cooldown that increases all damage caused by 20% and give us more frequent access to our Hammer of Wrath ability if the Sanctified Wrath talent is active.
  • Holy Avenger - a new and reworked version of our previous Zealotry spell which makes our Holy Power generator spells deal 30% additional damage and generate 3 Holy Power instead of 1.
  • Guardian of Ancient Kings - summons a Guardian which increases our Strength every time it hits the target by 1% and on departure deals damage to all enemies within 10 yards.

    Defensive cooldowns

  • Sacred Shield - protects you with a Shield that absorbs damage.
  • Divine Protection - reduces Magic damage taken by 40%.
  • Divine Shield - protects you from all damage for 8 seconds but reduces your damage by 50% for the entire duration.
  • Devotion Aura - Raid cooldown that reduces Magic damage taken by all Raid members within 40 yards by 20% and makes them immune to Interrupting and Silencing effects.
  • Hand of Protection - makes a player immune to physical damage and will be proven useful in the MoP raiding tier.
  • Hand of Purity places a 6-second buff on a target, reducing the damage they take from harmful periodic effects by 80%, and from harmful periodic effects that cannot be prevented by immunities by 40%. It also reduces all damage taken by 10%.
  • Lay on Hands - grants a friendly target Health that is equal to your maximum Health.

    Utility

  • Rebuke - our interrupt spell, notice that it has a much larger cooldown than previously.
  • Hammer of Justice - our stun spell.
  • Hand of Freedom - makes us immune to movement impairing effects for 6 seconds.
  • Hand of Salvation - reduces a players threat.
  • Emancipate - removes a movement impairing effect from yourself.

  • One target(have Seal of Truth activated when you face one target) - list of priorities - low geared.
    Inq > ES > TV > HoW > CS > Judge > Exo

    • In the first seconds of the fight cast Guardian of Ancient Kings so you can make your increased stacks of strength.(use it at cooldown)
    • Always keep your Inquisition up using always 3 Holy power and refresh it in the lasted 3-5 seconds of the buff(pro tip: if you got fights with exra mobs that you can kill them use the Glyph of Inquisition and try to land a a killing blow, with this glyph your inquisition buff will get a 30+ seconds with a max of 120.To do so, after you use your guardian at the start of the fight, start using your damage abilities like: Judgement, Crusader Strike(this depends on your starting range, if you are far, if you’re closer use first Crusader Strike) & Exorcism so you can get your Inquisition before using your burst.
    • Cast Avenging Wrath on cd.(if you’re really low geared, play with the Holy Avenger talent and use them in the same time with a macro, that macro you will have it listed in the next part of the tutorial written below. You can use this combo if you are a fan of burst classes at the same time, or one after one starting with avenging wrath, and ending it’s cooldown by using Holy Avenger)
    • Use Execution sentence at cooldown, never without Inquisition and a best choice is to use it if you got engineering with the Synapse sprins or at the begining of the fight after you use Avenging Wrath(if you are really low geared(you don’t got neither heroic gear from ToT, you must play in your talents with Holy Avenger)
    • Cast Hammer of Wrath on cooldown.(this ability you can use it only when you use Avenging Wrath or the boss/mob is lower than 20% of hp)
    • If you play with Holy Avenger you may cast next Templar’s Verdict(if your Hammer of Wrath is on cooldown use other abilities like Crusader Strike / Judgement / Exorcism to generate your holy power so you can use Templar’s Verdict). If you’re not playing at it and you play at Sanctified Wrath, you may use Hammer of Wrathon cooldown, and the rest of the holy power generators to cast Templar’s Verdict(remember the spell priority CS>Judge>Exo)
    • After your burst is gone you will use your holy power generators to keep your Inquisition up always and to spam Templar’s Verdict until the boss goes lower than 20% to unlock your hammer of wrath or until your burst is up again

  • One target(have Seal of Truth activated when you face one target) - list of priorities - end geared T16
    Inq > FreeDS(T16BONUS,5HP) > TV(5HP) > HoW > FreeDS(AW) > TV(AW) > CS > Judge > FreeDS > Exo > TV(3/4)

    • The rotation will change a lot(if you get the trinket from galakras, your burst cooldowns, abilities will have a reduce cooldown) In the first seconds of the fight cast Guardian of Ancient Kings so you can make your increased stacks of strength.(use it at cooldown)
    • You will have the opportunity to add Divine Storm in your rotation, keep in mind that this ability is affected by Inquisition, if it procs and you can use it free, use the proc after you have Inquisition on you
    • the big difference between the low geared rotation and and gear is that you will cast Templar’s Verdict at 3/4 holy power IF your Avenging Wrath is on cooldown and 4/5 holy power when you will have the opportunity to spam Hammer of Wrath(when the boss is lower than 20% of his HP on when your cd is up). Keep in mind that a Divine Storm used in Avenging Wrath when you have the free proc is bigger than the holy power generators.

  • AOE targets - list of priorities
    Inq > DS > LH > HoW > HotR > Judge > Exo

The multiple target (AoE) rotation is based on the same priority system as the single target one. As the number of targets you are facing increases, certain changes occur, as follows:
You need to replace some abilities in fight and before the fight(change your talents by playing at Divine Purpose instead of Sanctified Wrath and Light's Hammer instead of Execution Sentence)

    • Against 2 targets, replace Templar’s Verdict with Divine Storm, and replace Crusader Strike with Hammer of the Righteous.
    • Against 4 targets, replace Seal of Truth with Seal of Righteousness.

If you have the 4-Part Tier 16 Set Bonus, you must be on the look-out for the Divine Storm procs, since they are very important.

You should switch targets between your enemies constantly in order to benefit from Glyph of Double Jeopardy, and to maintain full Censure stacks(from Seal of Truth) on each target.

Against 4 or more enemies, Seal of Righteousness is better than Seal of Truth, but only in case you manage to switch the seal during a moment of down-time, or if the targets will live for a long time.
