The Indigo Rose Software Deployment Suite is a collection of four related Indigo Rose products: AutoPlay Media Studio, Setup Factory, Visual Patch and TrueUpdate. Together, these four products form a complete software deployment toolkit.

The software deployment cycle really consists of two separate yet similar processes. The first is the initial deployment of a software product. The second is the ongoing maintenance of a product through updates and patches as the developer rolls out new versions.

Initial Deployment
The initial deployment consists of five basic steps:



Step 1: Create Software
This step is normally complete or close to complete when the developer begins to use the products from the software deployment suite.

Step 2: Create Updater
The developer uses TrueUpdate to design and configure the automatic update component to be distributed with their software. TrueUpdate creates an update executable and a data file to distribute along with the developer's software. The developer will normally incorporate a "check for update" command into their software that launches the update process.

Step 3: Create Installer
The developer uses Setup Factory to design and create a setup program that installs files, makes Registry changes, starts and stops services, creates shortcuts, etc. The update executable created with TrueUpdate is included in the setup along with the developer's files.

Step 4: Create Autorun CD/DVD
The developer uses AutoPlay Media Studio to design a custom autorun menu for their distribution CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM). The menu will automatically appear when the end user inserts the disc into their drive and can present options such as "Launch Installer," "Read Product Documentation," "Visit Web Site," and "Contact Us." AutoPlay Media Studio can either burn the CD/DVD from within the software or generate the autorun menu to a folder that can then be burnt with other CD/DVD authoring software.

Step 5: Deploy & Distribute
The developer distributes their software to the end users via CD/DVD-ROM or the Internet.




Ongoing Maintenance
The ongoing maintenance of software consists of six basic steps:



Step 1: Create New Version
As time goes by the developer fixes bugs in the software and adds new features and improvements. It is important that the updated software is deployed to the end users as quickly as possible in order to minimize support issues from bugs that have already been fixed as well as to maximize customer satisfaction.

Step 2: Create Patch
The developer uses Visual Patch to create a patch file. This is done by listing each version of the software and its files inside of Visual Patch and then building the patch executable. Visual Patch uses binary differencing algorithms and other advanced techniques to produce the smallest possible patch for the software. Small patches mean lower bandwidth, faster delivery, and increased security.

Step 3: Configure Updater
The developer adjusts their TrueUpdate project with the new logic and files needed to identify, download and apply the new patch file. The new patch is immediately available to users as soon as the developer publishes the changes to their TrueUpdate server.

Step 4: Refresh Installer
The developer uses Setup Factory to make an updated setup executable file for the new version of the software.

Step 5: Re-Build Autorun CD/DVD
The developer uses AutoPlay Media Studio to re-generate a new CD/DVD that contains the newest version of the software and software installer.

Step 6: Deploy & Distribute
The developer rolls out their new setup and CD/DVDs to new users. Fortunately existing users will not need to receive a new CD/DVD or setup since TrueUpdate automatically updates their software.
