Bazat pe memoriile pianistului W. Szpillmann, Pianistul este povestea adevãratã a unui strãlucit pianist polonez, care, datoritã originii sale evreieºti este forþat ca pe timpul ocupaþiei naziste a Poloniei sã ducã o viaþã de fugar, pentru a scãpa de deportare.
Szpilmann reuºeºte sã fugã din ghetoul din Varºovia ºi îºi va petrece ani buni ascunzându-se printre ruinele oraºului. Salvarea îi vine de la un ofiþer german, care îl va ajuta sã supravieþuiascã.
