Filmul urmãreºte povestea lui Dudley, o tânãrã de 27 ani aparent banalã ce are un efect devastator asupra oricãrei persoane apropiate, toþi prietenii ei sfârºind prin a se rãni grav sau chiar uciºi în circumstanþe dintre cele mai bizare. Încercând sã desluºeascã misterul, preotul comunitãþii locale descoperã cã tânãra este posedatã ºi cere ajutor pentru a face o exorcizare. Numai cã pãrintele Lozano ºi Cardinalul Bruun, venit tocmai de la Vatican pentru a rãspunde acestei solicitãri neobiºnuite, descoperã cã spiritul care a posedat trupul tinerei este de fapt un demon satanic din vremuri strãvechi, malefic ºi mult mai puternic decât ºi-ar fi închipuit.
