Conectivitatea prin fibrã opticã este, la ora actualã, principalul mod de a transmite date, insa cablurile ce transmit lumina vor fi, eventual, inlocuite. Laserele pot transmite informatii prin intermitente. Practic, starile de pornit/oprit ale laserelor pot fi convertite in 1 si 0, cele doua elemente ale sistemului binar. O astfel de cifra binara, contine cantitatea de informatie de 1 bit.
