question referring to the high ms experenceing

I got over 4k ms currently, after 2 server maintience I am assuming that was done earlier. the issue is still there. I am not complaining due to I play for free. but its really affecting the gameplay :/. What could be causing it?

If the entire server is experiencing high latency, then patience is required until the issue is fixed on the server's side. However, if you are the only one experiencing high latency, you can follow a few of my steps below to help resolve the issue.

MS stands for "milliseconds." Whatever number is in front of this acronym is the amount of time (in milliseconds) that it takes for data to go from you to your server and back. In the background, you have two different types of latency, "home" and "world."

In essence, 'Home' refers to your connection to your realm server. This connection sends chat data, auction house stuff, guild chat and info, some addon data, and various other data. It is a pretty slim connection in terms of bandwidth requirements.

'World' is a reference to the connection to the WoW Freakz servers that transmits all the other data... combat, data from the people around you (specs, gear, enchants, etc.), NPCs, mobs, casting, professions, etc. Going into a highly populated zone (like a capital city) will drastically increase the amount of data being sent over this connection and will raise the reported latency.


Below, you can see the most common causes of high latency:

1) Wireless
2) Packet loss
3) Almost-but-not-quite-broadband*
4) AddOns (yes, those wonderful UI modifications)
5) Firewalls (some firewalls do interesting things to latency... try playing without it to see if it helps!)
5) Mis-configured or defective home routers (please temporarily bypass before anything else)
6) Quality of Service and Traffic Management Systems performing packet queuing of some sort.
7) Net link saturation (not necessarily your ISP, but somewhere between you and WoW Freakz)

Lowering video settings (especially view distance) has the added benefit of lowering the amount of data your connection is asked to convey, as well, so even that can be a valid troubleshooting step.

If your 'Home' connection latency is low and your 'World' connection latency is high, that frequently indicates that there is some sort of QoS congestion controls being applied to your internet connection, at either the micro (LAN) or macro (WAN) level. A common symptom would be that you would be able to chat, but not to cast.

If both connections report high latency, that means your connection to the servers, in general, is almost completely saturated, or 'overflowing'. Without making any claims where that saturation lies, that seems to have been the most common case to date.

I am also having this problem, I have seen multiple posts on the lag in these forums but not much has happened.

I am currently living in Taiwan. I have a 24Mbps connection.

I have tested disabling all addons when the lag happens.

I am running the lowest video settings possible, 45fps in Org.

This is clearly an issue with the gateway/server hops in the connection from people outside Romania to freakz.ro...

Halfway through my tracert it started to go real slow and looked like packets were going missing/getting timeouts (see hop 16 onwards).

PLEASE CALL/EMAIL THE HELL OUT OF THESE CRAPPY ISP'S OR HOSTS... or whatever is causing the problem... I know how ISP's can be real unhelpful and never fix anything... You need to call them 50 times

Unfortunately these kind of problems are out of our reach. As you can see in the traceroute Serkol posted

The latency starts somewhere in the middle of the connection between wow freakz and your computer... this is some isp/node in Austria. You could try contacting your ISP but these kind of problems are getting attention only when a big ISP/whatever complains.
I can't see anything we can do about it (I'll try making some complaints though)
