What is the point of raid lockouts?

Ok, first of all, just to clarify, this post is not a 'get rid of the lockouts' post, it is merely to ask what the point is. I simply do not see the point in it and have tried googling it, but nothing definitive turned up.

Hey, Maelvox!
If there are no raid lockouts, people will be able to farm gears daily, making the progression true heroic faster, reaching best in slot faster and respectively getting bored will also be faster.

Think of it as a mechanism created by Blizzard to make it's customers (the players) play more and more. Because in the end, in an MMO the goal is the replay value. The more people play the game, the more monthly payments, hence more money
