I can confirm I had the same issue - I used 2 flawless-critter-battle-stone trying to upgrade an imperial silkworm Both attempts failed. I also tried a flawless-flying-battle-stone on a yellow-moth and it also failed. It is difficult to show a screenshot as there is no record shown in any log as to the item being used - only way to prove is to test it yourself and see the result.
