The proof is the tooltips: execute is a melee attack and strikes of opportunity procs from melee attacks.
Also because of this execute doesn't proc sweeping strikes and bloodbath:

Mastery: Strikes of Opportunity should be able to get triggered from Execute.
This is the Warrior (Arms specialization) mastery. You have a chance for all your melee attacks (special abilities included, such as mortal strike, slam, thunder clap, heroic strike, bladestorm) to trigger an additional attack for 55% normal damage.
Execute is also a melee attack, which means it should be able to trigger the Mastery proc, just like all the other abilities. I think even Hamstring triggers it.

I have only used melee hits (to gain rage) and execute.
77,45% mastery
89 melee hits
67 opportunity strikes (which is correct proc chance, 77%)
37 executes
0 opportunity strikes from execute
