Do you have every legendary for all 3 specs on your DK? If so, this is why the game gave you a random Bind to Account legendary token.

24 legendaries is the exact number of all Death Knight legendaries (if by that you excluded the crafted one).
Just to be sure, can you please provide the picture of all your legendaries? Or since it's easier, name the legendaries that you're missing on your Death Knight.

Once you have all of the legendaries for your class(on all specs) you should get random class legendary tokens to use on your alts. This currently doesn't work on freakz, however opening a Purified Titan Essence has the same result. That's why you received a mage token.

You didn't "lose" the essences. That's how the system works. If you have all legendaries (excluding the Argus and crafted ones), when you purchase the token, you get a legendary randomized for one of your alts.
