Actiunea filmului este plasata într-un viitor apropiat, în care Pamântul este invadat de o rasa extraterestra extrem de ostila. Întreaga planeta este atacata în mod constant, iar omenirea abia mai poate face fata.Ofiterul William Cage (Tom Cruise) nu a calcat niciodata pe câmpul de lupta, dar
se vede prins subit într-o misiune sinucigasa. Desi este ucis în doar câteva minute, Cage se trezeste în mod inexplicabil la începutul zilei fatidice,
retraind în mod repetat aceleasi experiente care s-au încheiat cu moartea sa.Însa, cu fiecare batalie purtata, Cage devine din ce în ce mai experimentat si, împreuna cu ofiterul Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), ajunge din ce în ce mai aproape de înfrângerea extraterestrilor.
