Welcome to our comprehensive Discipline Priest guide. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about playing a Discipline Priest in a raid environment, though most of the content also applies to normal and heroic dungeons.
Priest healers are the most versatile of the 4 healing classes. The Discipline specialisation provides healers with many tools, suited to most situations encountered during raids.
Discipline Priests specialise in damage absorption and mitigation. Through various abilities and talents, Discipline Priests aim at avoiding damage and smoothing out incoming damage, rather than simply healing it.
Discipline Priests can tank heal and raid heal equally well, although each task is performed in a different way (and indeed, there are different ways in which each task can be performed). This leads to a large variety of playstyle options and each option comes with different talents and statistic priority.
To make it easy to bookmark the specific sections you are interested in, we have split the guide into 7 pages:
Talents, Builds, and Glyphs: learn what the best talent trees are and how to customise them;

3. Customising Your Build
Discipline Priests have several options at their disposal to customise both their tank healing and raid healing builds. We detailed both of them in this section. We also discuss the glyphs that should be taken.
3.1. Talents
.1. TalentsIn the image below, the fixed talents have been highlighted in green, while the optional talents have been highlighted in red.

3.1.1. Fixed Talents+ display section
3.1.2. Differences Between Tank Healing and Raid Healing
There are a great many variations of the talent build that you should use. These depend, primarily, on whether you are interested in tank healing or raid healing. For raid healing, you will want to skip out on Strength of Soul and Inspiration and take talents that are more beneficial to raid healing, such as Darkness (as spell haste has raid-healing benefits). There are also many talents that are suited to specific situations.
Keep in mind that the distinction between tank healer and raid healer is really only possible in 25-man raids. In 10-man raids, each healer will have to perform several, different tasks, in the same encounter (especially if the raid is only using 2 healers). As such, you cannot always use a purely tank healing build or a purely raid healing build. Rather, you will need to adapt your build to your raid's requirements.
3.1.3. Atonement Healing Variation
Atonement healing is an entirely optional playstyle, which is viable in tank healing and raid healing. Atonement healing can be very useful in fights where there are times when healing is not strained, as it allows you to contribute to the DPS while still doing very mana-efficient healing. Below, you will find the list of talents that you should take for Atonement healing:
•2/2 Evangelism: this talent allows you to stack a buff on yourself ( Evangelism), each time you deal damage with Smite or Holy Fire. At the maximum 5 stacks, the buff increases the damage that you deal with these abilities by 20%, and also reduces their mana cost (as well as the mana cost of Penance) by 30%.
•1/1 Archangel: this gives you the Archangel ability. Using this ability will consume all of your Evangelism stacks, and instantly restore 1% of your total mana and increase your healing done by 3%, per stack. So, at 5 stacks, you will gain 5% of your total mana and a 15% healing increase. The healing increase lasts for 18 seconds.
•2/2 Atonement: this talent allows you to heal targets by dealing damage with Smite and Holy Fire. The lowest health raid member, within 15 yards of the target you are damaging, will be healed for the amount of damage that you deal with Smite and Holy Fire. If you yourself are benefiting from the heal, its effects are reduced by 50%.
Additionally, because Archangel grants you a 15% healing increase for 18 seconds, you can use this buff to your advantage, by stacking Evangelism up to 5 stacks before a time where a lot of healing will be needed, and then using it to boost your healing.
3.1.4. Other Filler Talents
•1/3 Inner Sanctum: this is a filler talent that you can take, in case you have not taken any of the Atonement talents, in order to unlock further talent tiers. It reduces all damage taken by 2% while Inner Fire is active and increases your movement speed by a further 2% while Inner Will is active.
•2/2 Strength of Soul: healing a target affected by Weakened Soul with Heal, Flash Heal or Greater Heal reduces the duration of the Weakened Soul debuff by 4 seconds. This is an excellent tank-healing talent, as it allows you to cast Power Word: Shield a lot more often on the tank.
•2/2 Train of Thought: each time you heal a target with Greater Heal, the cooldown of Inner Focus is reduced by 5 seconds. This is another useful tank healing talent (although it does have some merit in raid healing situations), as it allows you to benefit from Inner Focus a lot more often, all while casting Greater Heal on the tank (which you will do often).
•2/2 Inspiration: each time you heal someone with a critical heal from Heal, Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Binding Heal, Penance, Prayer of Healing or Prayer of Mending, they receive a buff which reduces physical damage taken by 10% for 15 seconds. This buff is also provided by Restoration Shamans ( Ancestral Healing).
•1/1 Desperate Prayer: this talent gives you the Desperate Prayer ability. This is large, mana-free self-heal, which is off the global cooldown. This talent can be useful on fights where you receive a lot of damage.
•3/3 Darkness: increases your spell haste by 3%. This talent is useful if you are raid healing (where Haste Rating is beneficial) or if you simply wish to cast faster. You can also take 1/3 or 2/3 points in this talent, depending on what other talents you have chosen.
•2/2 Veiled Shadows: this is a mana regeneration talent, as it reduces the cooldown of your Shadowfiend (a mana regeneration ability) by 1 minute, allowing you to cast it more often.
3.2. Glyphs
3.2.1. Prime Glyphs
There is one mandatory Prime Glyph, as a Discipline Priest:
•Glyph of Power Word: Shield: instantly heals the target for 20% of the amount that your shield absorbs. As you are using Power Word Shield often, this glyph is of great benefit, especially as it provides you with a (small) heal which you can cast will moving.
For your other glyphs, you should choose two from among the following:
•Glyph of Penance: reduces the cooldown of Penance (a great single-target and tank healing spell) by 2 seconds. This is useful in most cases, unless you are preparing for a heavy raid damage encounter.
•Glyph of Prayer of Healing: grants your Prayer of Healing (an AoE heal) a healing-over-time effect, which heals for 20% of the initial heal, over 6 seconds. This is an excellent glyph on fights with heavy raid damage.
•Glyph of Power Word: Barrier: increases the healing received by all targets within the barrier by 10% (from all sources). If the encounter allows you to efficiently use Power Word: Barrier, then this glyph will likely be very useful.
3.2.2. Major Glyphs
. Major Glyphs•Glyph of Prayer of Mending: this increases the first heal of your Prayer of Mending spell by 60% and it is an excellent healing increase glyph.
•Glyph of Divine Accuracy: ensures that your Smite and Holy Fire spells will always hit, regardless of your Hit Rating. This is mandatory any time you wish to make use of Atonement healing, but is rather useless otherwise.
•Glyph of Smite: increases the damage you deal with Smite against targets affected by Holy Fire. This greatly enhances Atonement healing, but is useless otherwise.
•Glyph of Mass Dispel: reduces the cast time of your Mass Dispel ability by 1 second.
3.2.3. Minor Glyphs
•Glyph of Fortitude: reduces the mana cost of your Power Word: Fortitude spell by 50%. This is useful in case you need to re-apply the buff during combat.
•Glyph of Fading: reduces the mana cost of your Fade spell by 30%. This can be useful on encounters where you find yourself using Fade often.
•Glyph of Shadowfiend: instantly grants you 5% of your maximum mana if your Shadowfiend dies from damage. Shadowfiends rarely die in PvE content (as they benefit from a lot of AoE damage reduction), but there are no better alternatives.
Discipline Priest PvE Guide: Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities
In this article, we list your core abilities and how they should be used together (rotation). We also explain when to use your various cooldowns. Then, we go deeper and present all the subtleties that playing a Discipline Priest will face you with. The other articles of our Discipline Priest guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the left.
1. Basic Rotation
Healing is in great part based on your ability to react to the damage that the raid takes, and as such there is no set rotation. Rather, you must understand what spells are best suited to the different situations that can occur during a raid encounter.
1.1. Tank or Single Target Healing
When healing the tank or a single target, you should use the two spells on cooldown, as they are excellent in terms of mana efficiency:
• Penance, unless the tank is taking very heavy damage and requires the bigger healing from Greater Heal;
• Power Word: Shield.
In addition to using these two spells on cooldown, you have several other options, depending on the damage:
Low and moderate damage
◦Make extensive use of Heal.
◦Use Prayer of Mending, if it will jump to other players.
◦Use Renew, if all of the following are true:
■you are moving;
■the target has Weakened Soul (from a Power Word: Shield);
■ Prayer of Mending is on cooldown.
High sustained damage
◦Make extensive use of Greater Heal.
◦Use Prayer of Mending, if it will jump to other players.
Emergency situations
◦Use Flash Heal in most cases.
◦Use Binding Heal, if you also need healing.
1.2. Raid Healing
Raid healing as a Discipline Priest relies on 3 spells: Prayer of Mending, Prayer of Healing, and Power Word: Shield.
•Use Prayer of Mending on cooldown.
•Low and moderate damage
◦Make extensive use of Prayer of Healing.
High damage
◦Stack Divine Aegis on your healing assignments (by casting Prayer of Healing on them repeatedly).
◦Make moderate use of Power Word: Shield.
High sustained damage
◦Spam Prayer of Healing.
2. Cooldown Usage
• Inner Focus should be used on cooldown.
• Pain Suppression should be used on a tank, before a damage spike.
• Power Word: Barrier should be used to mitigate intense AoE damage; it requires the raid to be stacked in one place.
• Power Infusion should be use whenever AoE damage is high (so that you can afford spamming Prayer of Healing).
3. Inner Fire and Inner Will
As a Priest, you have access to two (mutually exclusive) self-buffs: Inner Fire and Inner Will.
For the majority of the time, you will want to use Inner Fire and take advantage of its spell power benefit. However, if you need to use a lot of instant-cast spells (multiple Power Word: Shields, Prayer of Mending, Dispel Magic), you can switch to Inner Will.
4. Optional Read: Mastering Your Discipline Priest↑top
While the guidelines we have given so far will enable you to perform very decently as a Discipline Priest, there are many subtleties which you need to be aware of, if you want to play your character to its full potential.
4.1. Smiting and Atonement Healing
Discipline Priests have a unique type of ability. By spending a number of 5 talent points in a few non-essential talents in the Discipline tree, they can heal players, automatically, by dealing damage to enemies through Smite and Holy Fire. This healing is a smart heal (it heals the lowest health target in range) and it is very mana efficient. In addition to these benefits, it allows the Priest to also contribute to the raid's DPS.
With the appropriate talents ( Evangelism, Archangel and Atonement), each time you deal damage with Smite and Holy Fire, the lowest health player within 15 yards of the target (the target you have dealt damage to) is healed for the amount of damage that you did.
Glyph of Divine Accuracy ensures that these spells will never miss, and Glyph of Smite increases the damage of Smite (and with this, the healing from Atonement) by 20% on targets affected by Holy Fire. Holy Fire has a 10 second cooldown and its (very weak) DoT effect has a 7 second duration.
Atonement healing is very simple: use Holy Fire on cooldown and spam Smite on the target. You will quickly get a feel of the amount of healing you can expect, and whether or not it is sufficient to heal the tank or the raid.
Note that, while spamming Smite, your mana will go down (very slowly).
If the period of low damage, during which you were Smiting, is followed by a period of high damage, which requires a lot of healing, you should use Archangel to gain a 15% healing increase (keep in mind that Archangel will consume the stacks of Evangelism that you had been building and/or maintaining).
Atonement healing is especially useful during times when the boss or another mob takes increased damage. This will cause you to generate very high heals on the nearby players, while also contributing to the raid's DPS.
4.2. Important Mechanics
In order to use your spells appropriately for the situations you encounter, you must first understand several aspects of the Discipline specialisation.
4.2.1. Mastery and Absorption Effects
The Discipline Mastery is Shield Discipline. Essentially, your Mastery Rating increases the amount of damage absorbed by your absorption effects.
Discipline Priests have two absorption effects: Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis.
Power Word: Shield is quite simple. You place a shield on a target, which absorbs a certain amount of damage (affected not only by your Mastery, but also by your spell power). Applying a shield to a target causes the Weakened Soul debuff, which prevents them from being shielded again (by you or any other priest) for 15 seconds.
The Divine Aegis talent provides you with a passive absorption mechanic. Each time you critically heal with a spell, a shield is placed on the target and will absorb damage equal to 30% of the amount healed. This does not mean that 70% of the heal is an actual heal, and that 30% is an absorb; the absorb is added to the heal amount. In addition to Divine Aegis from critical heals, all heals from Prayer of Healing also add Divine Aegis.
Divine Aegis has a 15 second duration, and each new application of the buff (such as from a subsequent critical heal or Prayer of Healing) will stack on top of the previous Divine Aegis (merging the remaining amount of absorption with the amount of absorption created by the new shield) and refresh its duration. Note that the amount absorbed by Divine Aegis is limited to 40% of the casting Priest's maximum health. In practice, this means you cannot stack Divine Aegis higher than roughly 50,000 damage absorption.
Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis can co-exist on the same target at the same time, without any kind of interaction between them. Damage caused to the target will first consume the Divine Aegis (partially or entirely, depending on the damage) and then consume the Power Word: Shield.
Absorption is a key element of Discipline healing. Shielding people is a means of preventive healing, which reduces the spikes in damage taken and ensures that damage is more predictable.
4.2.2. Borrowed Time
After each cast of Power Word: Shield you gain the Borrowed Time buff. This reduces the cast time of your next spell by 14%, provided that you cast a spell within 6 seconds (before the buff expires). Casting a spell consumes the buff. Note that spells with an instant cast time, as well as channeled spells, do not benefit from nor consume the buff.
Normally, Discipline Priests have long cast time heals, namely Heal, Greater Heal and Prayer of Healing. Therefore, these spells are the best candidates for consuming the Borrowed Time buff with. What this means is that, essentially, you will want to cast a Power Word: Shield, and gain the Borrowed Time buff, before any of these three heals.
When you know that you will have to cast an important heal (a Greater Heal on the tank, who will be taking high damage at that time, for example), it is good to think ahead and have your Borrowed Time buff active.
Penance does not consume the Borrowed Time buff, even though its cast time does benefit from the buff. An important note should be made here. For maximum efficiency, you should try to cast a Penance after your Power Word: Shield and before the heal which will consume Borrowed Time.
4.2.3. Mana Management
Discipline Priests have three means of regenerating mana during combat:
• Hymn of Hope;
• Shadowfiend;
• Rapture.
Hymn of Hope is a channeled spell that restores mana in a "smart" way to several low-mana raid members and increases their maximum mana by 15% for 8 seconds. It has a 6 minute cooldown.
Hymn of Hope will, most likely, be only used once or possibly twice during the encounter. The best time to use this ability is hard to determine ahead of time, as it depends on a great number of factors. Follow these guidelines:
•Try to use Hymn of Hope as many times during an encounter as possible.
•Only use Hymn of Hope when you are not at maximum mana.
•Do not use Hymn of Hope if you will need to interrupt the cast before it finishes (8 second cast), because of having to move or heal.
•Do not use Hymn of Hope when there is a lot of raid damage. Your inability to heal while channeling Hymn of Hope will force other healers to compensate by using mana inefficient spells.
•Remember that Hymn of Hope benefits not only you, but also other low-mana players (generally, these will be healers). This means that you should use it when more healers can get the benefit from it, i.e. when their mana is low and they can use class-specific mana regeneration cooldowns, such as Divine Plea for Holy Paladins. This is because the mana-pool increasing effect of Hymn of Hope increases the potency of mana regeneration cooldowns which are based on maximum mana. In order to ensure that mana goes to healers and not to DPS players, you can do some of the following:
◦Have DPS players (only those who generally run low on mana) use their own mana cooldowns first, ensuring that the healers are the lowest on mana.
◦Have the healers stack up together in an area far away from the DPS players, since Hymn of Hope seems to prefer closer players, despite its 40 yard range.
Shadowfiend will summon a pet that attacks the target, restoring some of your maximum mana to you each time it makes an attack. Shadowfiend has a slightly lower cooldown than Hymn of Hope (5 minutes, or 4 minutes with 2/2 Veiled Shadows). It should be used as many times during an encounter as possible. Ideally, it should be used while Hymn of Hope is active (as Hymn of Hope temporarily increases your maximum mana, and Shadowfiend grants you a percentage of your maximum mana with each attack it makes).
Lastly, it is ideal to have your Shadowfiend active just before Heroism/ Bloodlust/ Time Warp is used. This is because pets benefit from the increased attack speed, if they are active when the cast is made, but not if they are released after it has been cast. The extra attack speed will translate into more attacks and thus more mana returned to you.
Rapture is a much more dynamic and delicate mana regeneration method to master. Your goal is to have one of your Power Word: Shields break roughly every 13 seconds, for as much of the fight as possible.
This is not as easy as it seems, in practice. Often, the only person taking the sustained damage required to break a shield is the tank, and the Weakened Soul debuff lasts 15 seconds, meaning you can only shield the target once every 15 seconds. It could then take a few more seconds (depending on boss attack speed, dodges or parries) for the shield to break, pushing the interval between Rapture procs to close to 20 seconds.
When there is sustained raid damage, or when there are two tanks taking damage at the same time, maintaining a high Rapture uptime is easier.
This is something you will have to practice in order to master. We recommend using the Ingela's Rapture add-on to track the time remaining until the Rapture internal cooldown wears off.
4.2.4. Inner Fire and Inner Will
As a Priest, you have access to two (mutually exclusive) self-buffs:
• Inner Fire: increases your spell power by 532, and also increases your armor by 60%.
• Inner Will: reduces the mana cost of instant cast spells by 15%, and also increases your movement speed by 10%.
You will want to have one of these two self-buffs active at all times (they cost no mana to apply and have an unlimited duration).
For the majority of the time, you will want to use Inner Fire and take advantage of the spell power benefit. However, if you need to use a lot of instant-cast spells (multiple Power Word: Shields, Prayer of Mending, Dispel Magic), you can switch to Inner Will.
Keep in mind that Power Word: Shields used in Inner Will will absorb slightly less damage.
Finally, the movement speed increase from Inner Will can prove useful in some situations.
4.3. Important Abilities
As a Discipline Priest, you have a great number of healing spells in your arsenal. It is important to understand how each of them work. In addition to the healing spells, you also have a number of valuable cooldowns that you will need to make use of.
While we may, summarily, mention some of the interactions between various abilities, we will also detail all of these interactions in a subsequent section.
4.3.1. Healing spells
Penance: this is the spell you gain for choosing the Discipline specialisation. It is a very mana efficient spell. It is a channel spell. This spell will heal the target three times, over a period of 2 seconds. The first heal happens as soon as the cast begins (so, essentially, it is an instant cast heal), the second happens one second in, and the third happens on the 2 second mark. These numbers are a bit different in reality, as this spell is affected by your spell haste. A final note of importance, regarding Penance, is that your character will automatically turn to face the target you are trying to heal.
Power Word: Shield: this is the most iconic Discipline spell. It places a shield on the target, which absorbs a (rather large) amount of damage. The amount of damage absorbed is affected by your spell power and by your Mastery. The spell is instant cast and has no cooldown, but it does apply the Weakened Soul debuff on the target (preventing them from receiving another Power Word: Shield for 15 seconds). This means that you can shield multiple people (such as in preparation for a damage spike) but not repeatedly shield the same person in quick succession. The duration of the Weakened Soul debuff is reduced by some direct heals on that target, if you have talented Strength of Soul. Thanks to Rapture, each time one of your shields is fully consumed, you regain 7% of your maximum mana (although not more often than once every 12 seconds). Finally, for the 6 seconds following a Power Word: Shield cast, your next spell cast benefits from 14% increased spell haste.
Heal: this is your most mana efficient spell. It heals for a very low amount, has a high cast time and a low mana cost. At a reasonable gear level, you can spam this ability and not run out of mana. When used on a player with the Weakened Soul debuff, if you have Strength of Soul talented, it will reduce the duration of Weakened Soul by 4 seconds.
• Greater Heal: this spell is your "big" healing spell. It heals for a very large amount, but also costs a lot of mana to use. It has a high cast time. When used on a player with the Weakened Soul debuff, if you have Strength of Soul talented, it will reduce the duration of Weakened Soul by 4 seconds. If Train of Thought is talented, then the cooldown of your Inner Focus is reduced by 5 seconds each time you cast Greater Heal.
Flash Heal: this is an emergency healing spell. It heals for a reasonable amount, but is very mana inefficient. It does, however, have a very short cast time. When used on a player with the Weakened Soul debuff, if you have Strength of Soul talented, it will reduce the duration of Weakened Soul by 4 seconds.
Binding Heal: this spell is very similar to Flash Heal in terms of casting time and mana cost. It heals its target for slightly less than Flash Heal, but at the same time, it heals you for the same amount.
Prayer of Healing: this is your main AoE heal. It heals the entire group of the targeted raid member (so a maximum of 5 players), provided that they are within 30 yards of the targeted raid member. It is extremely mana efficient, provided that at least 3 players will benefit from the heal (i.e., it will not overheal them). This spell also places a protective barrier, Divine Aegis (very similar to Power Word: Shield) for 30% of the amount healed on all the targets that it heals. Furthermore, with the appropriate glyph, this spell also heals the affected players for an additional 20% over 6 seconds.
Prayer of Mending: this is rather unique type of spell. It is a single target heal, which acts as a buff that you place on a target. The buff lasts for 30 seconds and has 5 charges. When that target takes damage, the buff heals them and jumps from them to another raid member. It appears to prefer jumping to lower health members, although this behaviour is not consistent, nor does there seem to be a noticeable pattern when all the players are at full health. When jumping, the buff loses a charge and resets its duration to 30 seconds. When all the charges have run out, the buff disappears. The cooldown of the spell is only 10 seconds, meaning that you can keep it active at all times. Note that you cannot have the buff active on multiple targets at once.
Divine Hymn: this is a channeled spell, which heals the 5 lowest health targets in your party or raid (within 40 yards), every 2 seconds, for 8 seconds. Targets healed by this spell also gain 10% increased healing for 8 seconds. Despite the tooltip listing a hard limitation of the maximum number of potential heals (12), this is not true in reality. In fact, the more spell haste you have, the more heals you gain from this spell. It has an 8 minute cooldown and it is extremely mana efficient.
Desperate Prayer: this ability is only available if you have taken the Desperate Prayer talent. It is an instant cast, off the global cooldown, mana free self-heal, which heals for 30% of your maximum health.
Renew: this is an instant cast, healing over time spell. It is not an efficient spell for Discipline Priests. You should only ever use this spell when there are literally no other alternatives.
4.3.2. Cooldowns
Power Infusion: this spell can be cast on either yourself or another mana using raid member. It reduces the mana cost of all spells by 20% and increases casting speed by 20% for its 15 second duration.
Inner Focus: this ability, which is off the global cooldown, makes your next Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing cost no mana and have a 25% increased critical strike chance. Using this spell places a buff on you, which has an unlimited duration, and lasts until one of the two aforementioned spells is cast.
Pain Suppression: a single target damage reduction cooldown. Reduces all damage taken by the target by 40% for 8 seconds.
Power Word: Barrier: places a protective bubble at a target location, reducing the damage taken by all targets within it by 25%.
Hymn of Hope: this is a channeled spell that, over the course of 8 seconds, restores 2% of maximum mana to the 3 lowest mana raid members. In addition to this, it also increases their maximum mana by 15% for 8 seconds. Spell haste will increase the number of mana restores that this spell provides, despite the tooltip listing a hard limitation of 12 restores.
Shadowfiend: summons a pet that attacks your target. Each one of its attacks grants you 3% of your maximum mana. After 15 seconds, the Shadowfiend disappears.
4.4. Tank and Single Target Healing
When healing the tank (we associate single target healing to tank healing), you have two spells which are excellent in terms of mana efficiency:
Penance: you should use this on cooldown, unless the tank is taking very heavy damage and requires the bigger healing from Greater Heal. Try to always cast this spell while Borrowed Time is active.
Power Word: Shield: casting Power Word: Shield on the tank is excellent. Power Word: Shield is rather expensive, but the amount of absorption is also quite large. Additionally, it provides you with Rapture, regenerating some of your mana and it grants you Borrowed Time, speeding up your next cast of (most likely) Heal or Greater Heal. Moreover, thanks to the Renewed Hope talent, your spells on the tank, who is now affected by Weakened Soul, have an increased chance to critically hit.
In addition to using these two spells on the tank on cooldown, you have several other options:
Heal: for times when the tank is taking a low amount of damage. Casting Heal will ensure that your mana level does not decrease at all.
Greater Heal: for times of heavy tank damage. Greater Heal heals for a very large amount, and, with the Strength of Soul talent, also lowers the duration of Weakened Soul on the tank, allowing you to shield more often and benefit from Borrowed Time more often.
Flash Heal: this is an emergency heal which should not be used unless the tank has Weakened Soul and will die before you finish casting Greater Heal. If Penance is available, and you believe that the first heal from Penance will be sufficient to allow the tank to survive the damage they take (or if the damage they are likely to receive will occur after the second heal from Penance), then you should use Penance on the tank instead, as it is more mana efficient.
Binding Heal: this should be used in the same scenario as Flash Heal, with the added mention that you yourself should also be in great need of healing. If you are not in need of healing, Flash Heal is more efficient.
Prayer of Mending is an extremely efficient spell, and one of its great advantages is that it performs its effect (jumping from player to player, healing them as they take damage) independently of any action from your part. The efficiency of this spell depends greatly on the type of damage in the encounter. If there is no damage on anyone except for the tank, then it is likely that the spell will jump once, and then its 30 second duration will simply run out.
As a single target heal, (the tank, in this case), Prayer of Mending's worth should be judged based on whether or not it is likely to jump to other targets and whether or not the tank may die because of the time you spent not casting a big heal.
Therefore, if the tank is taking low or moderate damage, and Prayer of Mending is likely to jump multiple times, you should cast it on the tank. If the tank is taking brutal damage, or if no one else is likely to take damage for some time, then Prayer of Mending is not worth casting on the tank.
Finally, you can cast Renew, as a tank or single target healing spell. Keep in mind that this is, by far, your least efficient healing spell (it is instant cast, but because it heals over time, its effect will not be immediately felt. Renew should only be cast if all three following conditions are met:
1.You are moving (so you cannot cast any spells with a cast time).
2.The target has Weakened Soul.
3. Prayer of Mending is on cooldown.
4.5. Raid Healing
When having to heal multiple raid members at once, your most efficient choice is Prayer of Healing. This spell is extremely mana efficient, especially if all 5 group members are damaged and require healing.
Prayer of Healing is even more beneficial if the raid damage is followed by even more raid damage within 15 seconds of your heals (the duration of Divine Aegis), as this means that the absorbs generated by Prayer of Healing will be put to good use.
In preparation for a very big AoE damaging attack, you can stack Divine Aegis on several groups (by casting repeated Prayers of Healing on them, refreshing/stacking the Divine Aegis buff).
When using Prayer of Healing, keep in mind that the target of your spell is the one which group members must be within 30 yards of, so try to heal the player with the most central location (respective to their group).
Power Word: Shield can and should be used when dealing with raid damage (provided that the raid damage is not so intensive that if you stop chain-casting Prayer of Healing, players will die). This will provide you with mana from Rapture, as well as with many procs of Borrowed Time, greatly speeding up your Prayers of Healing.
Power Word: Shield is a quite costly spell, however, so trying to shield everyone in preparation for an AoE damage spike is not extremely feasible (though it can be done, if needed, several times per fight, with correct mana management).
Prayer of Mending is a spell which you should try to have up all the time during AoE damage. If the damage ticks every second, or (as is more likely the case) every 2 seconds, you will have to cast it on cooldown to maximise its uptime.
4.6. More on Cooldown Usage
Inner Focus should be used on cooldown, so that it is used as many times as possible during an encounter. It is mostly used for the mana-free aspect, rather than the increased critical strike chance that it provides.
Pain Suppression should generally be used on a tank, at a time when they are going to receive a lot of damage. Be sure to communicate with the tank, so that they do not also use a defensive cooldown at the same time. It can also be used on random raid members who are targeted by specific boss abilities.
Power Word: Barrier is an excellent ability for AoE damage reduction. Its greatest benefits are when the entire raid is stacked up in the same place, and it should be used as part of a cooldown rotation with other healers. Do not hesitate, however, to use it on a single target (such as the tank) when Pain Suppression is not available (provided, of course, that you are not assigned to save Power Word: Barrier for a specific moment).
Power Infusion can be used to increase your healing throughput and reduce the mana cost of your spells. It is especially useful during times of heavy AoE damage, where you wish to cast many Prayer of Healing spells in quick succession.
Power Infusion can be used, equally well, on a caster DPS player (Arcane Mage, Balance Druid) to boost their DPS greatly.
Discipline Priest PvE Guide: Statistics Priority and Reforging
In this article, we explain what the best statistics are for Discipline Priests, how the class benefits from each of them, and what your reforging strategy should be. We also detail what the various caps are and why they should be attained. The statistics priority is important as it influences reforging strategies as well as itemisation choices (gear, enchants, and gems).
Make sure to check our Gear Optimisation Guide, which serves as a support guide for this article. The other articles of our Discipline Priest guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.
1. Basics
Unlike other classes, Discipline Priests do not have a preset statistic priority. Instead, they can choose between 3 statistic priorities that are perfectly viable for both tank and raid healing. Choosing your priority will affect your playstyle, as we explain later in this article.
•Intellect > Spirit > Haste Rating > Mastery Rating > Critical Strike Rating
◦tank healing: very accurate healing (heals reach your target in time)
◦raid healing: highest AoE healing output
•Intellect > Spirit > Mastery Rating > Critical Strike Rating > Haste Rating
◦tank healing: highest tank healing output
◦raid healing: ideal for long periods of sustained damage
•Intellect > Spirit > Mastery Rating > Haste Rating > Critical Strike Rating
◦tank healing: good healing output and accuracy
◦raid healing: ideal when you want to prevent damage rather than heal it
If you are unsure what the optimal reforging strategy is for the priority you choose, please refer to the reforging section of our Gear Optimisation Guide, which explains how to use WoW Reforge.
2. Getting a Better Understanding
2.1. Statistics Explanations
2.1.1. Intellect
Intellect is the only statistic which is clearly optimal for Discipline Priests. It is the best statistic for mana regeneration (as it increases your mana pool, and all of your means of mana regeneration are based on your maximum mana) as well as for healing throughput. You should attempt to get as much Intellect as you can (mostly through having higher item level gear and getting Intellect enchants, where available).
Enlightenment, a passive ability that you gain for choosing the Discipline specialisation, increases your Intellect by 15%.
2.1.2. Spirit
Spirit is the healer statistic. It increases your mana regeneration. You will, for the most part, prefer gear pieces with Spirit, although if the other secondary statistic on the item is undesirable to you, it may be worth using an item without Spirit.
How much Spirit you should have is up to you and your playstyle. If you are running out of mana often, even while properly using your mana regeneration cooldowns, you should aim for more Spirit. Keep in mind that this advice does not take into account your spell usage, which can be the cause for your mana problems.
If you are comfortable with your level of mana regeneration, you can start reforging out of Spirit or avoiding gear with Spirit, and opt for more throughput.
2.1.3. Haste Rating
Haste Rating is most useful for AoE raid healing. It can be useful for single target healing (either in the case of tank healing or raid healing), depending on the situation.
Haste Rating has the following benefits:
•Reduces the cast time of all your spells, increasing the chance that you will finish casting before your target dies as well as that you will finish casting before you are forced to move.
•Provides the highest throughput, in the case of Prayer of Healing spam (AoE raid damage).
•Increases the amount of healing ticks from Renew as well as the amount of ticks from Hymn of Hope and Divine Hymn.
•Allows you to cast Greater Heal on the same target more often, thus reducing the Weakened Soul debuff faster (if Strength of Soul is talented), thus allowing you to shield this target (very useful when tank healing) more often.
Prioritising Haste Rating over other statistics will result in the following drawbacks:
•By casting more spells in a given amount of time, you will deplete your mana faster.
•Your absorption effects ( Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis) will be weaker due to the lack of Mastery Rating.
•Your spells will be critical heals less often (and thus also cause Divine Aegis less often) due to the lack of Critical Strike Rating.
2.1.4. Mastery Rating
Mastery Rating is most useful for tank healing or sustained AoE raid healing. It can be useful for single target raid healing or other types of AoE raid healing, depending on various factors.
Mastery Rating has the following benefits:
•It increases the amount absorbed by your Power Word: Shield, boosting its efficiency any time your shield is entirely consumed (this is mostly the case with tank damage).
•It increases the amount absorbed by your Divine Aegis. This is only of benefit when there is enough damage to break your Divine Aegis, as otherwise the effect is wasted (such as if the Divine Aegis you have stacked after healing the raid up with Prayer of Healing expires without being broken by damage).
Prioritising Mastery Rating over other statistics will result in the following drawbacks:
•All your spells with a cast time will be cast slower, and will gain no benefit from Mastery Rating unless they are critical heals (with the exception of Prayer of Healing).
•Your spells will be critical heals less often (and thus also cause Divine Aegis less often) due to the lack of Critical Strike Rating.
2.1.5. Critical Strike Rating
Critical Strike Rating is most useful for tank healing. For single target or AoE raid healing, it can provide certain benefits in some situations, though these are generally outweighed by the drawbacks.
Critical Strike Rating provides the following benefits:
•Gives your heals a chance to heal for double their normal amount.
•Increases the chance for you to proc Divine Aegis (from critical heals).
Prioritising Critical Strike Rating over other statistics will result in the following drawbacks:
•All your spells with a cast time will be slower.
•The absorption effects from Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis will be relatively weak, due to the lack of Mastery Rating.
•You run a high risk of regularly overhealing targets because of your critical heals (with the exception of the tank who is more likely to be lower on health and thus able to benefit from greater heals).
2.2. Priorities
Because Haste Rating, Mastery Rating and Critical Strike Rating all complement each other, it is difficult to say to completely drop one statistic for another.
Our advice is to always analyse your current situation (your role, the other healers in your raid, the type of damage in the encounter) and choose the statistics which fit it best. We propose the following three combinations, though others may work just as well for you.
2.2.1. Haste Rating > Mastery Rating > Critical Strike Rating
This statistic combination will yield the most powerful AoE raid healing (i.e., spamming Prayer of Healing). It ensures that you are able to complete more casts in a given amount of time and that your heals have a greater chance to reach their target before the target dies.
Furthermore, this gives you a higher chance to finish a cast before being forced to move due to environmental damage or other fight mechanics.
In case of tank healing, prioritising Haste Rating means that you can cast Heal and Greater Heal more quickly on the tank, also lower their Weakened Soul debuff faster (assuming you have Strength of Soul talented), meaning that you can shield them more often.
For single target healing on players other than the tank, it means that your casts will reach their target faster, giving you more accuracy.
2.2.2. Mastery Rating > Critical Strike Rating > Haste Rating
This statistic combination is the strongest for tank healing. It provides a large amount of absorption from your Power Word: Shield on the tank. Additionally, any Divine Aegis on the tank will be greater, as well. This is especially useful since the Divine Aegis on the tank will almost always be used up entirely by the damage they receive.
The Critical Strike Rating will provide you with a chance for "double heals". These will most often not overheal, as the tank will seldom be at full health.
For AoE raid healing, this combination can provide excellent results in situations where there is sustained raid damage. This is because the Divine Aegises from your Prayer of Healing (which will be quite strong due to your Mastery Rating) will end up being used fully by the constant raid damage.
In raid damage situations where there are long periods of time in between the damage spikes, Mastery Rating's efficiency drops significantly, since Divine Aegis will generally expire (after 15 seconds) and thus be of no use.
2.2.3. Mastery Rating > Haste Rating > Critical Strike Rating
This statistic combination will provide you with the benefits of high Mastery Rating (stronger absorbs from Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis), while also providing you with a relatively low cast time on your spells.
It is beneficial for AoE raid healing, when you desire to prevent more of the damage rather than to heal it. It also allows you to use Prayer of Healing on one or more groups, in order to build up Divine Aegis in preparation for a big damage spike.
It also provides good tank healing, by providing stronger shields and faster heals on the tank, while avoiding the unpredictability of Critical Strike Rating.
Discipline Priest PvE Guide: Gems, Enchants, and Consumables
In this article, we present you with the best gems and enchants that you can get for a Discipline Priest, including profession-specific perks. We also list the best consumables: food, flasks, and potions.
Make sure to check our Gear Optimisation Guide, which serves as a support guide for this article. The other articles of our Discipline Priest guide can be accessed from the table of content on the left.
1. Gems
Due to the complementary nature of your secondary statistics, you you will want to pick up all of the socket bonuses. Also, your yellow gems should correspond to the statistic priority that you chose for your playstyle (see our Statistics article for Discipline Priests).

Back: Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect///Lightweave Embroidery (Tailoring)
Chest: Enchant Chest - Peerless Stats
Wrists: Enchant Bracer - Mighty Intellect///Draconic Embossment - Intellect (Leatherworking)
Hands: Enchant Gloves - Greater Mastery/////Enchant Gloves - Haste
Waist: Ebonsteel Belt Buckle
Legs: Powerful Ghostly Spellthread///Sanctified Spellthread (Tailoring)
Feet: Enchant Boots - Lavawalker////Enchant Boots - Haste (cheaper)
Rings: Enchant Ring - Intellect (Enchanting)
Weapon: Enchant Weapon - Power Torrent/////Enchant Weapon - Heartsong
Off-Hand: Enchant Off-Hand - Superior Intellect
Note that Extra Enchantments can be applied to an item in addition to a Main Enchantment.
2.1. Power Torrent Versus Heartsong
When choosing between Enchant Weapon - Power Torrent and Enchant Weapon - Heartsong as your weapon enchant, there are a few things to keep in mind. Please understand that there is no clear answer to this debate, and we would like to just provide you with a few arguments to make your choice.
•Power Torrent provides more raw healing output (extra spellpower and critical strike chance) than Heartsong, but it procs randomly and is entirely uncontrollable (it has a 45 second internal cooldown).
•Heartsong does not provide any healing output per se, offering only mana regeneration. Even though Heartsong procs randomly as well (it has a 20 second internal cooldown), the mana that it provides is stored up in your mana pool (unless you were at maximum mana when it procced), allowing you to use it when needed.
If you prefer having more control over your resources, then we recommend Heartsong.
Do not be mistaken, simply because Heartsong offers mana regeneration, it does not mean that it does not boost your healing output. On the contrary, as your healing output is in great part influenced by how much mana you can spend on powerful (and possibly inefficient) heals, having more mana allows you to heal for more.
A common situation that can make Power Torrent greatly lose its value is if it procs during a phase transition, a period of low damage, or a time when you have to move or are targeted by some other incapacitating boss ability. On the other hand, if the encounter you are progressing on requires you to heal players constantly, in a sustained manner, then Power Torrent may be more valuable than Heartsong.
3. Consumables
You should always be eating food that provides 90 intellect, whether this is in the form of:
•Severed Sagefish Head or
•Seafood Magnifique Feast or
•Fortune Cookie
Your flask should be a Flask of the Draconic Mind.
During the encounter, your best choice for a potion will be either Mythical Mana Potion or Potion of Concentration (depending on whether or not you can afford the 10 second downtime).
4. Summing-up Profession Perks
Choosing a profession for your Discipline Priest can impact your raid performance. As a rule, you should shy away from gathering professions (with the exception of Herbalism), which leaves the following viable professions for raiding:
Tailoring: Provides a gain of approximately 120 Intellect through Lightweave Embroidery or 120 Spirit through Darkglow Embroidery. It also provides Sanctified Spellthread, a much cheaper equivalent of Powerful Ghostly Spellthread, the usual leg enchant.
Blacksmithing: Provides a 100 Intellect gain through two extra sockets: Socket Bracer and Socket Gloves. Only provides an 80 Intellect gain if you are still using Brilliant Inferno Ruby, and not the newer Brilliant Queen's Garnet.
Jewelcrafting: Provides a 51 Intellect gain through the ability of using 3 Brilliant Chimera's Eye. It does provide an 81 Intellect gain if you are still using Brilliant Inferno Ruby and not the newer Brilliant Queen's Garnet.
Alchemy: Provides an 80 Intellect gain to your flask through Mixology.
Enchanting: Provides an 80 Intellect gain through Enchant Ring - Intellect.
Engineering: Provides an 80 Intellect gain in average through Synapse Springs. Also provides Grounded Plasma Shield, an additional Waist enchant that can be used as a survival tool during encounters, but it runs the risk of backfiring (in which case, you taunt and take aggro on all nearby mobs).
Inscription:Provides an 80 Intellect gain through Felfire Inscription. It also saves you from the trouble of farming reputation with Therazane to get the usual enchantment.
Leatherworking: Provides an 80 Intellect gain through Draconic Embossment - Intellect.
Herbalism: Provides an 80 Haste Rating gain in average through Lifeblood.
With the exception of Tailoring, which is currently the best profession for casters, you will generally prefer a passive Intellect bonus over any of the temporary gains. Indeed, Lifeblood provides Haste Rating, which, as a Discipline Priest, is much less valuable than any Intellect bonus. Synapse Springs is good, but if you already have an on-use trinket, the two effects cannot be used simultaneously and you will prefer that of your trinket, which is, most likely, a lot more powerful than that of Synapse Springs.
Discipline Priest PvE Guide: Macros and Addons
Macros and addons are an integral part of a raider's arsenal as they can make it easier to perform a variety of tasks, improving your overall game experience. Below, we present macros and addons that can be useful to a Discipline Priest. On the left side, you will find links to the other parts of the guide.
1. Macros
1.1. Generic Macros for Priests
1.1.1. Leap of Faith Mouseover Macro
/cast [target=mouseover,help,nodead][]Leap of Faith
This macro will cast Leap of Faith on the target your are currently mousing over, if it is a friendly target and not dead. Otherwise, it will cast Leap of Faith on your current target.
1.2. Specific Macros for Discipline Priests
While we do not recommend any specific macro for Discipline Priests, we do highly suggest that all of your heals, as well as other spells that can be cast on raid members (such as Power Infusion) be incorporated into mouseover macros. This will allow you to much more easily cast them on raid members.
Here is an example of a mouseover macro. Simply replace Heal with the name of the spell you want to use:
#showtooltip Heal
/cast [target=mouseover,help,nodead][]Heal
This will cast Heal on your mouseover target, if it is a friendly target and it is not dead. Otherwise, it will cast heal on your current target.
2. Addons
2.1. Generic Addons for Priests
2.1.1. ElvUI
Here, at Icy Veins, we use ElvUI for all our characters. This addon is a complete replacement of the default User Interface. It comes with almost everything you need to perform properly: action bars, cooldown timers, proc display, etc.
We strongly recommend you to get this addon.
2.1.2. Parrot or Mik's Scrolling Battle Text
Parrot and Mik's Scrolling Battle Text are highly customisable addons for displaying floating battle text while in combat (incoming heals, damage of your spells, etc.). They both work very well by default.
2.1.3. Power Auras Classic
Power Auras Classic is an extremely useful addon that allows you to have visual effects on your screen, helping you track your buffs, debuffs and cooldowns. It is highly customisable and it can make it much, much easier to keep track of your procs and play your spec more proficiently.
2.1.4. Recount
Recount is a well known addon that most people use for displaying current DPS or HPS (Healing Per Second). We advise you to also use it for checking what you take damage from and if the share of damage/healing you do with each of your abilities is similar to that of other players of your class.
2.2. Specific Addons for Discipline Priests
2.2.1. Ingela's Rapture
Ingela's Rapture is a useful addon that allows you to track the internal cooldown on your Rapture. It is excellent for maximising your Rapture uptime.

3. Loot Competition
Discipline Priests use Cloth Armor with Intellect, Spirit and Stamina as their main stats.
While Spirit is a healer statistic by definition, Discipline Priests will often make equally good use of Cloth items without Spirit. For these items, they will be competing against DPS specialisations. Note, also, that Balance Druids and Elemental Shamans can make use of Spirit gear. Mages and Warlocks, however, receive no benefit from Spirit whatsoever.
Therefore, apart from other Discipline Priests, they will also be competing for items with the classes listed below:
Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens: Paladins, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Warlocks
Cloth Armor: Always: Holy/Shadow Priests
Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
Amulets Always: Balance/Restoration Druids, Holy Paladins, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Elemental/Restoration Shamans
Cloaks Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
Rings
Trinkets: Restoration Druids, Holy Paladins, Holy Priests, and Restoration Shamans
Daggers Always: Balance/Restoration Druids, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Elemental/Restoration Shamans
Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
One-Handed Maces: Balance/Restoration Druids, Holy Paladins, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Elemental/Restoration Shamans
Off-Hand Frills: Always: Balance/Restoration Druids, Holy Paladins*, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Elemental/Restoration Shamans*
Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
Staves: Always: Balance/Restoration Druids, Holy/Shadow Priests, and Elemental/Restoration Shamans
Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
Wands: Always: Holy/Shadow Priests
Items without Spirit: Mages and Warlocks
* Holy Paladins and Restoration Shamans can also equip healing Shields. Therefore, they should never be given priority on an Off-Hand Frill, over Balance/Restoration Druids, Mages, Discipline/Holy Priest, Elemental Shamans, and Warlocks.
Note that even though Balance Druids, Shadow Priests, and Elemental Shamans can benefit from items with Spirit, loot masters will often give priority to healers for these items. Otherwise, it would be unfair, as healers will not roll on items with Hit Rating (since they cannot benefit from them).

WOW!
Did you make this on your own or was this copied from an existing guide?
Anyway - thanks a lot for the effort.
My (previous) priority alt (rather, the alt I considered to be my "best" back in 4.0.6)- was a Disc priest.
I actually had to change to HOLY now - not because of the changes in mechanics - but because of Recount AND Skada - both of which don't properly show the MASSIVE ABSORBS that Disc priests could (and should) still do.
But overall - I hope other priest players appreciate playing as Disc instead of going like rednecks:
"AHMAGERD! DISC PRIEST ERR PEE VERR PEE! NURT PEE VERR EEE!"
