Mining serves three professions: Blacksmithing, Engineering and Jewelcrafting, so it's really good combined with any of these.

It also gives you a nice passive - Toughness which at max mining skill gives you an extra 480 stamina!

Also with mining, you will learn Smelting which allows you to smelt (convert) ores to metal bars, depending on what you want to do with your finished product (Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting, etc).
Smelting also helps in increasing your mining skill, so if you happen to need just a bit more skill to learn the new mining rank, smelt some of your ores and then move on!

Mining is a gathering profession, and it takes some time to level it up to 600. Below I will list the best zones where I found the most Mining nodes. But first you need to follow a few steps.




Here is your simple-steps-list before you start:
First step - go to any of your faction cities, ask a guard, and learn Mining.
Second step - buy a Mining Pick and keep it in your bag, as you will need it in order to mine.
Third Step - Set your minimap to track: Find Minerals. This will be the way you will see where you need to mine.

Fourth Step - Install Gatherer. This addon will remember every single mining node (herbalism too) that you have mined. It is extremely useful!

Optional steps - buy items, enchants, which will boost your mining skill, or help with gathering.

- Enchant Gloves: Advanced Mining
- Goblin mining Helmet
- Forager's Gloves


PLEASE NOTE: While you go around Azeroth and do mining, the mining nodes will appear in 5 different colors. Each color represents whether or not that node will give you XP and increase your mining skill. These colors are:
Red - Not enough skill to mine.
Orange - 100% chance to increase your mining skill.
Yellow - 75% chance to increase your mining skill.
Green - 50% chance to increase your mining skill.
Gray - 0% chance to increase your mining skill.


Mining Ranks:
Mining skill 1 - 75 - Apprentice Miner
Mining skill 75 - 125 - Journeyman Miner
Mining skill 125 - 225 - Expert Miner
Mining skill 225 - 275 - Artisan Miner
Mining skill 275 - 350 - Master Miner
Mining skill 350 - 425 - Grand Master Miner
Mining skill 425 - 525 - Illustrious Grand Master Miner
Mining skill 525 - 600 - Zen Master Miner

Please keep in mind that Ghoste Iron Ore has a 30 minute respawn timer, while Rich Ghost Iron Ore has a 1 hour respawn timer.
Recommended zones: The Jade Forrest
Alternative zones: Valley of the Four Winds, Dread Wastes, Townlong Steppes (pretty much everywhere, but mostly these areas)

Heya Ventress, nice guide, I followed to the letter, now I'm at lvl700 mining.. =0D

But now I need some help, hope this won't mean I missed something. At level 700, I can mine everything everywhere in all WOW maps, but still stuck at
this lvl700. According to mining profession interface, I still need many levels to be able to smelt leystone ores and other Legion mats. And mining Draenor
mats don't raise that level any single point, so what I'm doing wrong or what I'm not doing? Vendors at Draenor garrison sells stuff that aren't growing my
level either, so I'm sure there are missions or mining activities I'm mising.. =0(

Thanks in advance for any hints you can provide, need to raise my mining profession to make nice jewelry... =0)
