7.2.5 Shadow Priest Guide
By Barney

Hello there and welcome to my guide on how to play Shadow Priest in Patch 7.2.5, in this guide I will be going over the talents, Rotation, Gearing and Addons and macro's.
For this guide I have had help from Mind and some of my guildmates.
I have been playing WoW for about 8 Years now and have been maining Priest for all of legion.
When I don't have stuff to do for my studies I raid with my guild and I like doing keystones.
Now onto the Guide itself.

Why Shadow?

Shadow is in a very good place in this tier, you can do some insane DPS in the new raid Tomb of Sargeras.
You also bring some nice utility to the raid with your healing cooldown and crowd control spells. Secondly, Shadow is one of highest APM (Actions Per Minute) specs in the whole game,
which makes the gameplay extremely fast paced and fun in my opinion.
Priest is also a nice class overall, with all of the specs being viable this patch, so all your offspecs are pretty good,
meaning if your group needs it you can also bring two of the strongest healing specs to the raid.

7.2.5 Changes

I want to start with the changes that happened in 7.2.5, as there were a few minor changes that affect gameplay more than would seem at first glance.

- Mindbender is now a viable talent choice as its insanity generation has been drastically improved.
The new artifact traits added this patch only improve this already good talent choice. It went up from 4 to 8 per tick/swing.
- The damage on Shadow Word: Pain has been increased by 10%

- Mental Fortitude has been nerfed, it now only shields for 4% of your max health instead of 8%

- The 4 piece tier set from Nighthold has been nerfed considerably and is no longer worth using over higher item level pieces.

- A new legendary ring was added Soul of the High Priest, this legendary gives you access to two talents in the first row,
so you can have both Twist of Fate and Fortress of the Mind at the same time. The DPS increase from this legendary is not that high however when compared with Sephuz's Secret and other stat rings.

- And lastly with a new raid tier a new tier set was also added, the 2 piece bonus makes your Mind flay increase the damage of your next Mind blast
and the 4 piece makes your insanity drain 10% slower while in Voidform.

Talents
For Shadow there are a few different talent combinations that are viable, they mainly change on what gear and stats you have, as I will show here.
The main one I use in most encounters is as follows:
-
- 15: Twist of Fate
- 30: Body and Soul
- 45: Mind Bomb
- 60: Lingering Insanity
- 75: Auspicious Spirits
- 90: Mindbender/Power Infusion
- 100: Legacy of the Void

or alternatively when going for more single target damage:

1: Twist of Fate this talent gives you a buff that increases your damage and healing by 20% for 10 seconds after attacking a target whose health is below 35%,
this talent is way better than both Fortress of the Mind and Shadow Word: Void when it comes to AOE fights, this is because in such fights there will be multiple times where you attack a target below 35% health.
and Fortress of the Mind is however a good choice when going with Surrender to Madness or if the encounter is pure single target.

2: Body and Soul Shadow priest lacks any form of easy movement spells and having a spell that can give you on demand movement is very important in many encounters.
This talent does just that by basically buffing your Power Word:Shield, giving it a movement speed bonus as well.
Having said that, in my opinion both Masochism and Mania can be useful in some situations, for instance Masochism can be used in high mythic keys that require a lot of damage reduction and
Mania is very strong in encounters that feature a lot of movement.

3: On this Tier the only talent that is really worth it is Mind Bomb,
this talent provides an insanely handy effect for mythic+ trash and it works really well together with Sephuz's Secret.
Both Psychic Voice and Dominant Mind should not be taken at all.

4: Lingering Insanity what this talent does is provide you with an almost permanent haste buff as in most encounters your haste stacks from Voidform
will not run out until you’re back in Voidform this is because your stacks will drain by 2% per second instead of the normal immediate drop.
Neither Reaper of Souls nor Void Ray provide such a strong bonus for your DPS.
However, if you’re playing with Surrender to Madness Reaper of Souls is almost mandatory, both because of the insanity gain and the fact that encounters where you would use S2M are often short encounters where you won’t benefit much from using Lingering Insanity.

5: Auspicious Spirits the increase in both damage and insanity that this talent offers makes it far better than both other
talents for this tier when your build has a lot of crit, this is because it makes your Shadowy apparitions stronger,
and these occur more often if you have more crit. If you somehow find yourself in a situation where you have lots of mastery gear laying around, playing with
San'Layn is also an option, but note that this is not optimal.
San'Layn is also better at low item levels, the scaling from mastery is better at that point so if youre not at about 910 itemlevel you should still stack mastery and go San'Layn

6: This is the one that will cause some debate, and I myself am not 100% sure yet which talent is best on this row, since Mindbender received a substantial buff it is now a viable talent to take.
Power Infusionis also very strong and is once again mandatory when playing with Surrender to Madness,
another place where it shines is on multitarget encounters, as having a haste and insanity gain buff up on
multiple targets multiplies the DPS effect on these fights whereas Mindbender will only give you more insanity gain.
This is one of those rare levels in a talent tree where all three options are viable in their own way,
but there is always one that shines on most occasions.
In the case of this row Power Infusion is the best for longer,
multitarget fights where you are attacking more than 2 targets at the same time.

Mindbender is the one that shines most on single target fights since even though
it doesn’t scale as well with multiple targets as PI does, on two or fewer targets its insanity generation and damage is higher and than PI.
Meaning that on fights where there will be 2 or fewer targets for about 70% or more you should go Mindbender,
if however this percentage gets lower or there are 3 targets for instance taking Power infusion is the way to go.
The cutoff for when you should switch between these talents of course also depends on your gear and your raid group.
This line is however mostly accurate for many heroic raiders when your DPS being 1% lower won’t mean that you will lose out on progress.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need just a bit more DPS to push a certain phase on a boss or any other reason to switch,
by all means go for it because as I said before, the cutoff is arbitrary. So to recap the difference, mindbender is the best talent for a lot of fights in raid,
but if you need extra burst damage or the encounter is multi target you should go for PI

Misery is the go to talent for mythic+.
It saves you one GCD per add meaning you can dot about 50% more adds per fight which is a huge DPS gain in m+,
During tyrannical week either mindbender or PI are also viable for extra boss damage.
Misery is also a great talent to take when you’re just starting out as a Shadow priest and just want to play the easiest way possible,
beware though that in many raid encounters it will be handily beaten by both PI and Mindbender.

7: For almost all encounters you can find in this tier Legacy of the Void is the clear winner,
your multitarget cleave is good enough already to outperform Shadow Crash on almost every single occasion.
And Surrender to Madness is so situational and hard to play with that it will almost never be viable
on any progression raids and even less so in any dungeon ever.
S2M is however extremely fun to play with on certain bosses when your raid is strong enough to kill a boss even if you mess up.

Stats

The most important stat for a Shadow Priest is haste, it increases the ticks of our DoTs, it decreases a few of our cool downs and it gives us extra ticks on Void Torrent. You should stack haste until about 14K or 40%
Crit is the second stat you should go after when you’ve reached your Haste ‘Cap’, aim for about 10-12K so around 30-35%
Mastery is our last important stat, it increases the damage of various abilities in our kit such as Void Bolt and Vampiric Touch, any leftover gear you have after reaching both of the first two goals should go into buffing your Mastery.
Versatility is basically useless and should be avoided as much as possible.
To summarize the stats:
Haste (until 40%) > Crit (until 30-35%)> Mastery>>>Versatility

Rotation

The Shadow rotation revolves around keeping your dots on as many targets as you can and keeping your Voidform active as long and frequently as possible.
This gives us a few options for the rotation, namely, AOE, Single Target and Void form.
This difference is because of Void Bolt, which is an ability only available while in Void form and because of multi target priorities.

Single Target
For a pure single target bossfight your rotation is as follows:

Cast Vampiric Touch

Cast Shadow Word: Pain

Cast Mind blast

Fill with Mind flay until either you reach Voidform or Mind Blast comes off cooldown.

When you enter Voidform your rotation changes a bit, as you gain the Voidbolt spell, a very strong single target spell that gives all the targets near your target 3 seconds extra time on your dots.
Your rotation will now be:

Cast Void Bolt

Cast Mind blast

Fill with Mind flay

You want to cast Power Infusion at about 30 stacks of Voidform,
to increase your Voidform and give you the biggest possible boost. If you find however that you can’t keep up
Voidform during the full duration of power infusion, cast it earlier. On the other hand,
if you notice that you have a bit of voidform left after the effects of PI wane you can always cast it later.
If you have taken Mindbender you should first cast it when you are at about 30 stacks of voidform
and then cast it on cooldown, but only when you are in Voidform. You can also wait a few seconds for a trinket to proc or for bloodlust to be popped before using your Mindbender
as its damage and insanity-generation scale with haste.
If the encounter is short you can also decide to only use Mindbender near the 30 stacks like you would with PI
Fill with Mind Flay until either of these comes of cooldown and keep on going.

Multi Target
When there are more targets in the fight that you know will live longer than 5 seconds you can start multidotting,
you apply your vampiric touch to the target and if you have not taken misery you can also cast Shadow word pain.
Then you seek out a target that’s in the middle of the pack and start Mind flaying them.
If there is one mob in the pack with significantly more health and the rest will not live as long you can also only put your dots on that one and Mind flay.
If you have taken Shadow crash you should wait until you reach Voidform or until your twists of fate procs,
giving you a short burst of damage that can deal up to 1.5 million damage per target if it crits.
Because your dots are so strong, multidotting deals a load of damage, and on some long living trash packs in high keys or on bosses
with strong adds you can do absurd amounts of DPS if you play it correctly.
Don’t be afraid to miss a GCD to reapply your dots on a target and don’t forget to cast Void bolt to prolong the duration of your dots.
So your rotation will become:

Cast Vampiric Touch on some high health targets.

Cast Shadow Word: Pain if you have not taken misery.

Cast Mind flay until you reach 65/100 Insanity

Cast Void Eruption

Cast Shadow Crash

Cast Void Bolt

Fill with Mind flay

If you have taken Power Infusion and you think the mobs won’t die before it’s at least three quarters finished, cast it but only after you have entered voidform.
Note however that in almost any environment where this would be useful,
Misery is the better talent. Meaning if you’re doing a high level key with the [Fortified] Affix you should go with Misery.

Remember that Void Bolt Extends the duration of your dots around the target by 3 seconds,
so keep casting that every time it comes off cooldown.
It is also important to note that on packs that are bigger than 4 mobs your Mind flay becomes more important than [Mind Blast].
You can occasionally cast it on a target that needs to die faster than others but it is not recommended.

Staying in Voidform is one of the challenges of playing Shadow and in my opinion it’s also the most fun part of the spec,
it seems to be an easy mechanic at first but at high level of play a lot can be won from using your cooldowns and spells correctly.
We have a few options for getting longer Voidforms, Dispersion Which stops insanity from draining completely but also stops you from getting more stacks of Voidform,
Void Torrent which does a lot of damage and stops your insanity from draining just like dispersion,
however your Voidform will continue to gain stacks while channeling it and lastly we can use Mindbender or
Power Infusion to prolong the Voidform. Another spell that is very powerful in extending our Voidforms is
Shadow Word: Death, it’s an instant spell that generates lots of insanity and it has 2 charges on a reasonably short cooldown.

A few tips to extend your Voidform:

- If you feel like your insanity is draining fast cast a SWD to get out of trouble for a short time until your Voidbolt comes off cooldown again

- If your insanity is draining fast and you have a lot of cooldowns, use Void torrent to prolong your Voidform and take some time to have the cooldowns reset

- The same can be done with Dispersion, with the only difference being your Voidform won’t gain any stacks.

- If available and specced into, use either your Mindbender or use power infusion for better insanity generation.
This is not always an option, but you should use your power infusion mainly for this purpose. Mindbenders is almost always better when cast on cooldown.

- Use SWD when you have other things on cooldown and need a quick load of insanity, ONLY use 2 successive SWD’s when everything has just gotten on cooldown,

this happens so rarely however that I can modify this advice into: NEVER use 2 casts of SWD directly after one another.
Your artifact gives you the ability Void Torrent, this deals lots of damage and stops your insanity from draining for 3 seconds.
As I noted before you can use this cooldown to extend your voidform, but this means using it about 30 seconds into your Voidform,
meaning that you wasted 30 seconds on the first cooldown of this ability. So here you have to think ahead,
if the fight is between 30 seconds and 1 minute, it’s worth it waiting to use your Void Torrent to extend the only voidform you’ll probably have in this fight.
This applies to many bosses in mythic+, but you have to think for yourself whether you will be fighting something for this specified time or longer.
Also worth noting is that its scaling with haste is pretty damn good, its damage can double or even triple when you have a few procs and/or bloodlust,
so using it 10 seconds later to wait for a BL can greatly increase your damage.
Like many abilities of the priest, play around with it and learn the encounters to time everything perfectly as to increase your DPS pretty considerably.

Gearing and BiS

For ToS gear you want to prioritize getting the tier 20 4piece as it is extremely powerful and the set bonus is worth about 5-10 item levels overall.
The best items of this tier are the chest, the legs and the head.
For the rest of the gear you want to prioritize stats over itemlevel to reach your haste but note that shadow has benefits from all stats except for versatility.
The new Trinkets that drop in ToS are very interesting, and deviate from the hasteproc trinkets that we were using for most of Nighthold. Currently the best trinkets are:

- Tarnished Sentinel Medallion

- Terror From Below

- Spectral Thurible

- Unstable Arcanocrystal (only with high titanforge)

- Chrono Shard

As for legendaries, currently the best ones are:
- Sephuz's Secret

- Mangaza's Madness

- Mother Shahraz's Seduction

- Anund's Seared Shackles

- Soul of the High Priest

Sephuz's Secret is extremely powerful even if you can’t trigger it often because of the stats that it gives, and if you can trigger it becomes even better.
The best part about it is that it has the same cooldown as our stun Mind Bomb so it can be triggered every 30 seconds if you can find stunnable targets. Using Silence will also trigger the effect

Mangaza’s Madness gives Mind Blast an extra charge, meaning you can always have one available of cooldown.

Anund’s Seared Shackles give your Voidbolt a damage buff every time either SWP or VT do damage,
this is a really good proc and it’s a lot of fun to see a fully charged Voidbolt do 4 million damage.

- Mother Shahraz’s Seduction
simply gives you 3 stacks of Voidform whenever you enter Voidform, while the draining stacks still start at 1, during fights this will give you an almost constant 6% haste increase which is huge for us

Soul of the High Priest is the last of the good legendaries.
It gives you the Twist of Fate Talent, meaning you can select either of the other two choice on that row. This is not a huge DPS increase but it is pretty meaningful nonetheless.

An honorable mention goes to Prydaz, Xavaric’s Magnum Opus
if you don’t have any of the five legendaries above or you are a progression raider or pushing high keys it is very useful
since the shield will give you a lot more survivability that can come in handy when doing cutting edge content. The stats that it gives us are also very good.
All of the other legendaries have their own place in the game but either have a bad effect or just don’t give you a sizeable DPS increase like these here do.

If your artifact is not yet at level 35, this is the path you should follow:

And once you have unlocked the 35th trait the following path:

For as far as artifact relics are concerned, there are a few traits that are better than most, but a lot of traits are worth the same itemlevel.

Fiending Dark relics are worth 3 itemlevels
To the Pain 2 itemlevels
Touch of Darkness 2 itemlevels
Creeping Shadows increase 2 itemlevels
Unleash the Shadows 1 itemlevel
The rest of the relics are not worth sacrificing itemlevels for.

For your enchants you want to get Binding of Intellect, Mark of the Claw and Binding of Haste, as these give you the most benefit.
Your food should be Azshari Salad and for your flask you should take Flask of the Whispered Pact.
On boss fights you should of course always prepot with Potion of Prolonged Power and either time your second pot with a second burst phase or with time warp.

Macro’s and Addons

There are a few handy macro’s that I really like using:

#showtooltip
/cast [@player, mod: shift] Purify Disease
/cast [harm] Dispel Magic; Purify Disease
What this macro does is either cast Purify Disease on yourself if you press shift,
or when you have a target it will either cast Dispel Magic on that target if it is unfriendly or it will cast
Purify Disease if it’s a friendly target, if you have no target it will cast Purify Disease on yourself.

#showtooltip
/cast [@focus, mod: shift] Silence
/cast [@target, nomod] Silence

This macro allows you to cast Silence to your focus without having to switch targets, this is handy on encounters that need a lot of interrupting.

#showtooltip Dispersion
/stopcasting
/cast Dispersion
/cancelaura Dispersion

This macro gives your Dispersion priority over anything else and makes all your current casts stop and will then cast dispersion,
if you click it again it will cancel the dispersion so you can continue to cast freely.

I use a lot of addons as a priest, first and foremost ElvUI, which is a completely new user interface that you can customize however you see fit.
This addon allows you to easier track buffs and debuffs both on yourself and your target. It also allows you complete access over your
casting bars and gives you the opportunity to move them as you please.

Another addon that I find very usefull is Twintops insanity bar,
what this addon does is that it tracks your insanity in a bar and gives you a lot of info about incoming insanity and how much you are losing per second,
I would totally recommend this addon if you want to minmax everything you can.

Lastly I use weakauras, this addon can make little cooldown bars, say when you have a certain buff and can even play sounds when a certain event happens,
I use this addon a lot and I think it really helps me with seeing everything better and more clearly.

here are the weakauras I use most:

Spoiler:

and
Spoiler:

both of these strings are very useful, the first one tracks your defensive cooldowns and the 2nd one tracks all your other spells.

This was my guide on how to play shadow priest in patch 7.2.5,
if you have any questions feel free to pm me on the forum or to whisper me in game,
lastly I’m also a member of the wow Freakz discord so if you want to you can reach me there as well.
Have Fun and Good Luck!

Would have been nice if you put a trinket spreadsheet (if you can find one). Anyway, congrats @ guide & keep up the good work -

hey, there is a trinket spreadsheet of course, however since howtopriest shutdown/moved all of their pages its only a sheet without any of the explanations.

You should NEVER cast mindbender as soon as you enter voidform, it wastes all insanity gains as you will be capping every second and wasting its benefit. Also worth mentioning mindbender benefits from HASTE so is great at later stacks, heck using dispersion when low on insanity will cause your mindbender to give you 75% of your bar!

Vampiric embrace is also not a raid wide heal.

Ideally you never want to disperse when Mindbender/VF is up, for more than 1-3 seconds. Offensively, it's best used to realign MB/VoiT CD if they are off by 1-2 seconds. Your stacks freeze so that's 6 stacks and 6 seconds of Mindbender you are losing by dispersing the full duration. Of course the reason for you dispersing makes the ultimate difference in how long you should disperse. For example, a full disperse is beneficial on Maiden when you have to run across the entire platform. This keeps you from dropping VF.

Dispersing before losing vf with mindbender and no instant casts allows you to refresh your insanity bar whilst not dropping stacks tho.

there is something to be said for both, but as we all know ideal circumstances don't occur all that often while raiding or doing dungeons, and a lot of the usage of VT, MB and Dispersion comes from personal experience and availability of these cooldowns.

If your in that situation to begin with, you already *** up and your CDs are out of sync now anyway. Gotta think VF or two ahead.

Blood elf or troll would be the best choice dps wise, but the difference is quite small so I would recommend choosing the race that you like the most.
